The House of Representatives has summoned the Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS), the Liberia National Police (LNP), and the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) to appear before Plenary next Tuesday to provide a comprehensive update on the tragic fire incident that claimed five lives in the Duport Road area.

Plenary’s decision comes in response to a communication from Montserrado County Electoral District #4 Representative, Hon. Michael Thomas, drawing attention to the devastating November 14, 2025 fire in the Shara Community. The incident resulted in the death of community chairlady Mrs. Deiode Garnette, her children Ms. Judee Garnette and Isaac Garnette, and two grandchildren, Christopher Freeman and Ruth Fleming. May their souls rest in peace.

According to Hon. Thomas, although the LNFS, LNP, and LEC swiftly responded to the scene and initiated investigations into the cause of the fire, none of the institutions have released an official report to the public. This, he said, has fueled ongoing speculation and conflicting accounts surrounding the tragic loss of lives.

“As the representative of the district where this heartbreaking incident occurred, I have taken a vested interest in ensuring that our constituents receive clarity,” Hon. Thomas stated. “The absence of official findings has intensified tensions and confusion within the community.”

In his communication, Hon. Thomas appealed to the House to invite the three institutions to present their investigation findings to Plenary, to help address public concerns and dispel misinformation.

Given the gravity of the matter, Plenary has agreed and formally summoned the LNFS, LNP, and LEC to appear next Tuesday to provide official reports, as part of the House’s oversight responsibility to safeguard the welfare of the Liberian people.

LWSC Boss Mo Ali Clarifies Basketball Court Ownership as Sen. Snowe Reaffirms LACE’s Role.

By: Romeo USayee

Monrovia, Liberia – LWSC Managing Director Mo Ali has clarified public confusion surrounding the newly constructed basketball court on the C.H. Dewey campus in Bomi County. According to Ali, the project is not a personal initiative of Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe but a government-funded development carried out through the Liberia Agency for Community Empowerment (LACE).

Ali noted that some individuals have been attributing the project to Senator Snowe personally, but he emphasized that only the basketball court at the senator’s private residence qualifies as his personal undertaking.

During the official program in Bomi County, Senator Snowe also informed citizens that the C.H. Dewey basketball court is not his private project. He explained that it is part of the Legislative Support Project, financed by the Government of Liberia and implemented by LACE, with the intention of strengthening community development and improving recreational and sporting opportunities for young people.

At the ceremony, the keys of the facility were formally turned over to LACE Executive Director Hon. Julius K. Sele, placing the project under the agency’s management.

The new court is expected to support youth engagement, enhance sports activities, and contribute to ongoing community empowerment efforts in Bomi County.

Montserrado District #12 Candidate Demands Probe Into Alleged Unlawful Deaths in Stephen A. Tolbert Estate

Monrovia, Liberia — Montserrado County District #12 Representative Candidate during the 2023 legislative election, Hon. Prince D. Kreplah, has writen a detail leter to Justice Minister Osford Tweh calling on the the government to launch an impartial investigation into the alleged deaths of nearly a dozen young people following a joint LDEA and LNP operation in the Stephen A. Tolbert Estate community.

According to Hon. Kreplah residents of the community alarm that officers of the Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA) and the Liberia National Police (LNP), reportedly led by LNP Chief Superintendent Toby Edwin Swen, conducted a raid in an area known as Portray, near the Gardnersville Special Project School. Eye witnesses reported that during the joint operation, live bullets were allegedly discharged and approximately fifteen individuals ended up in the Mesurado River, resulting in multiple injuries and at least six deaths. Among the deceased was reported to be a mentally ill man only identified as BK.

Kreplah stressed that under Liberian law and international human rights principles, individuals suspected of any offense, including drug-related activities, are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. He emphasized that law enforcement agencies are obligated to conduct operations in ways that preserve life and prevent unlawful or avoidable deaths.

The candidate expressed concern that the incident reportedly occurred more than a week ago, yet there has been no official statement or public report from either the LDEA or LNP detailing the purpose of the raid, the number of casualties, or the circumstances surrounding the alleged drownings. He warned that such silence may raise doubts about accountability and could negatively affect Liberia’s human rights reputation internationally.

Kreplah noted that while he supports lawful security efforts to protect communities, the government must operate strictly within the confines of the law. He believes the lack of transparency surrounding the incident could expose the country to accusations of extrajudicial actions if not promptly addressed.

He further stated that if the government does not provide serious redress, he may be compelled to escalate the matter to various institutions of the United States Government, including the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Congress Subcommittee on Human Rights or the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, and the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.

Kreplah reaffirmed his position as a stakeholder of Montserrado District #12 and maintained that the lives allegedly lost must be accounted for through a credible and timely investigation.

Sen. Snowe Dedicate Multipurpose Basketball and Volleyball Court in Bomi County.

Bomi County, Liberia – The Liberia Agency for Community Empowerment (LACE), in partnership with Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe, Jr., has officially dedicated a newly constructed multipurpose basketball and volleyball court in Bomi County as part of the Legislative Support Project.

The event brought together local leaders, students, and community members, with keynote remarks delivered by LACE’s Executive Director, Hon. Julius K. Sele, and Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe, Jr.

Speaking at the ceremony, LACE Executive Director Hon. Julius K. Sele traced the history and mandate of the agency, which was established in 2004 after the signing of the Accra Peace Accord. He explained that the agency was created to support Liberia’s post-war recovery by restoring damaged infrastructure, rebuilding communities, and implementing social protection programs.

He emphasized that LACE has, since its founding, worked across all counties with support from partners including the World Bank, USAID, the European Union, and the African Union. According to Sele, government support to the Legislative Support Project has enabled lawmakers to address community development needs, especially in areas needing critical infrastructure.

Hon. Sele noted that the newly dedicated court is one among several projects undertaken with contributions from both government and Senator Snowe. He stressed that ongoing support from national leadership is essential to ensuring that communities continue to benefit from such projects.

“If the government breaks support to this initiative, it means that communities will no longer have access to these interventions. We have demonstrated capacity and experience, and we must not be made redundant.”

Sele praised Senator Snowe for his continuous collaboration with LACE and for supplementing government funds with personal contributions to address the needs of Bomi residents. He expressed hope that similar projects could continue in 2025 and beyond if adequate budgetary support is maintained.

Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe, Jr. reiterated that the project was funded under the Government of Liberia’s Legislative Support Program and was implemented by LACE with full cooperation from his office.

Snowe reminded residents that legislative projects are funded by government allocations to lawmakers, but emphasized that he also contributes personal resources to support education, youth programs, and community initiatives in Bomi County.

“This court is government-funded under LACE, but we have always added our own resources. We support students, we support schools and clinics, and we have our own personal projects that are not government-funded.”

The Senator highlighted other community development initiatives, including scholarships for students studying abroad, vacation jobs for youth, and construction projects in various districts.

Describing the new sports facility, Snowe noted that the basketball court features an imported rubber surface, stadium seating, new fencing, dual lighting systems solar and equipment fully ordered by a Liberian construction firm—TNT Construction.

“Every person who worked on this project is a Liberian. We must promote our own engineers and technicians before giving opportunities to foreigners.

He formally turned the facility over to the school administration and community leaders, calling for its protection and responsible use.

The dedication of the multipurpose court is expected to enhance youth engagement, promote sports development, and serve as a safe recreational space for students and residents of Bomi County.

Both LACE and Senator Snowe reaffirmed their commitment to future projects that strengthen community development and improve the quality of life in the county.

"My attention has been drawn to a video circulating on the internet involving a staff of the Group of 77 and officers of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA).

Let me state this with absolute clarity and without contradiction: Anyone, and I mean anyone, connected to me by whatsoever means, whether by blood, by marriage, by employment, or by friendship, who engages in drug-related activities will face the full weight of the law.

Whether it is my wife, my children, my siblings, or anyone linked to my office, the law will take its course without hesitation and without interference!"

Prince Kreplah, CDC Candidate for Rep in District 12 writes about the Rescue MTA Bus that was rescued by those Students:

''The breakdown of a newly imported bus, purchased with taxpayer funds, after a brief two-hour journey from Monrovia to Gbanga, B**g County, is a national embarrassment and should spark the need for investigation of the purchasing arrangement to establish truthfulness in the procurement process.

Moreover, it is alarming that UP officials have failed to assign government-paid mechanics at MVTC to address the issue. Instead, they are took advantage of those innocent Liberian children by requesting them to push the faulty vehicle.

The Boakai UP government officials have consistently disparaged the 45 buses inherited from the CDC Weah administration, labeling them as old and damaged. However, these buses have been reliably transporting passengers from Monrovia to Maryland for over two months, covering over 20 hours per trip without incident, unlike the socall new buses from Ghana and the latest purchase.

UP officials have demonstrated a clear lack of trustworthiness, rendering them unfit to manage Liberia's resources''.

LIBERIA MARKS MAIDEN WORLD FISHERIES DAY AFTER 28 YEARS.

By: Romeo USayee

‎For the first time since its inception twenty-eight years ago, Liberia, today joins the rest of the world to mark this year’s World Fisheries Day (WFD). The day is used to raise awareness about the critical importance of healthy aquatic ecosystems, sustainable fisheries management, and the social and economic value of marine and inland ‎resources. World Fisheries Day is also used to recognize the critical role that fisheries play in food security, livelihoods, and cultural heritage.

‎In Liberia, the fisheries sector contributes an estimated 10% of the country’s Gross ‎Domestic Product (GDP), positioning it among the most valuable agricultural subsectors in the country. Beyond its economic value, fisheries underpin food security, poverty alleviation, social inclusion, and resilience in rural and coastal communities. Women play a particularly significant role in post-harvest processing and fish trade, while artisanal fisheries account for the majority of national fish supply.

‎Nine coastal counties out of the fifteen counties in Liberia. The country is made up of an extensive network of marine and inland water resources, stretching along a 570-kilometer coastline and enriched by productive river systems and estuaries. These natural assets sustain thousands of coastal and riparian households, provide
‎employment, and serve as a vital source of nutrition and income.

‎With the global theme of the celebration being, ““Blue Transformation in Action”,
‎Liberia has adopted a national theme of “Investing in Social Protection to Secure Equitable Blue Transformation in the Fisheries Sector”. This national theme is timely, as it affords the country an opportunity to review ongoing efforts to ‎address the EU yellow card issued to the country in 2017, end all forms of illegal, ‎unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing practices, protect artisanal fishers, promote of healthy fisheries sector and respect for both national and international fisheries laws.

‎This is also an opportune time to celebrate the resilience and contributions of fishermen and fishmongers, while drawing attention to the need for policies and practices that ensure the long-term sustainability of marine resources. It is also the time to encourage partnerships, share best practices, and renew commitments for responsible and sustainable fisheries.

‎Since Saturday, November 15, 2025, the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) together with partners and donor agencies such as the European Union, have been organising a series of events to sensitize various stakeholders on the importance of fisheries to livelihoods, food security and environmental conservation.

‎The events included a sports tournament, career day and inter-university fisheries
‎debate, awareness and clean-up campaigns and employee’s day. It is being climaxed today with a durbar at Buchanan, in Grand Bassa County, where all employees of NaFAA will be in their ocean blue t-shirt, demonstrating their collective commitment to the sustainable development of the fisheries sector.

‎World Fisheries Day is a global occasion that highlights the critical role of fisheries and aquaculture in sustaining communities, preserving marine ecosystems, and contributing to national economies. In recognition of this, wearing ocean blue will serve as a unifying visual representation of our shared responsibility to protect aquatic
‎resources and promote responsible fishing practices.

‎Liberia is currently benefiting from the European Union Technical Assistance Food Systems Governance Fisheries Activity to strengthen governance in the fisheries sector and to develop the fisheries value chain with focus on the setting up and strengthening of local governance and fisheries co-management associations. The goal is to create growth in the fisheries sector in Liberia, improve fisheries governance and reduce poverty.

‎The objective of this activity is to improve management of the fisheries sector in ‎Liberia, through strengthening the role of NaFAA as regulator, supervisor and ‎coordinator. The project aims to identify promising entrepreneurial talents along the fisheries value chain with focus on local production and marketing and proposes a realistic action to be funded by the EU to strengthen the fisheries value chain with focus on the domestic market.

‎Since its inception, the activity has been focusing on five main areas of work at NaFAA to help improve management of the fisheries sector in Liberia. These include strengthening the NaFAA’s management and leadership, building enforcement capacity against IUU fishing, supporting artisanal fisheries development led by the private sector, decentralizing and empowering local fisheries communities, and enhancing visibility and advocacy through media training and investigative journalism
‎to ensure accurate reportage on sustainable fisheries.

‎This week, the EU also revealed that in 2026, it will be rolling out a new project ‎targeting local fishers in all 9 coastal counties of the country to strengthen ‎decentralized governance structures, develop stronger small businesses, protect the marine environment and reduce all forms of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing practices in Liberian waters.

‎Therefore, this year’s World Fisheries Day celebration is important for Liberia’s ‎fisheries and must be used to promote inclusive policy dialogue on sustainable ‎fisheries, highlight governance reforms, support gender-responsive programming, advance national commitments to marine conservation, social protection, climate ‎resilience and align with international frameworks such as the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and the Sustainable Development Goals.
