🏛️🌊 The White City on the Mediterranean

🌊✨ Kamau Sadiki on Travel, Diving & Mozambique’s Hidden Island Treasure
What’s Kamau Sadiki’s favorite place to dive? One destination stands out — and it’s not on your typical travel list.

💬 “Ilha de Mozambique… I’ve been more than 15 times since 2013, and it never ceases to amaze me,” says Kamau Sadiki, veteran diver and instructor with Diving With A Purpose.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the island is a former Portuguese colonial capital with stunning architecture, vibrant culture, and some of the richest marine heritage in the region.

But getting there is a journey in itself:
✈️ 20-hour flight
🏨 Overnight in Johannesburg
🛫 3-hour flight to Nampula
🚗 4-hour drive to the coast
And finally… 🌴 a magical welcome to an island that feels like a world of its own.

Through Diving With A Purpose, Kamau and his team train locals in underwater archaeology and eco-tourism, helping Mozambicans reclaim their maritime stories and steward their environment — including a young local woman now leading mangrove tours!

And yes, the food? 🔥
💚 “I’m vegan, so I live for the greens and rice—with a heavy dose of their amazing peri peri hot sauce!”

🌊🕊️ “We do this work not to rewrite history, but to make sure it’s not forgotten.” — Kamau Sadiki

In January 1790, the slave ship L’Aurore prepared to set sail from the harbor of Ilha de Mozambique, carrying over 600 enslaved Africans. A desperate act of resistance led to tragedy. After a mutiny attempt, the crew locked the enslaved men below deck. Weeks later, a typhoon struck, and the crew abandoned ship, leaving the captives to perish. 331 lives were lost beneath the waves.

The wreck of the L’Aurore remained untouched for 230 years—until a team of Black divers, led in part by Kamau Sadiki of Diving With A Purpose (DWP), began the painstaking work of uncovering its story.

On a peaceful evening at Legacy Beach in Monrovia, Liberia, Africa Travel and Life’s Chrislyn Laurore spoke with Kamau about his life’s mission: using underwater archaeology to honor ancestors, restore memory, and educate future generations.

Kamau, a retired engineer and Howard University alumnus, has turned the sea into a sacred archive—one dive at a time.

💬 “These are not just shipwrecks. These are underwater burial grounds. Our work gives voice to the voiceless.”
