Jeety Donates LD$3 Million to Rebuild 114-Year-Old Suehn Industrial Academy
Business tycoon and philanthropist Upjit Singh Sachdeva, widely known as Jeety, has donated three million Liberian dollars (approximately US$16,900) in building materials to kick-start the reconstruction of the historic Suehn Industrial Academy, a 114-year-old institution that has remained in ruins since Liberia’s civil war.
The donation was announced during the Suehn Legacy Circle Fundraising Gala held on January 9 at the Monrovia City Hall, where Mr. Sachdeva delivered the keynote address.
His contribution emerged as the single largest donation raised during the event, providing a major boost to efforts aimed at restoring one of Liberia’s most iconic educational institutions.
Founded in 1912 by entrepreneurs Solomon Hill and June Moore of the Hill and Moore Trading Company, Suehn Industrial Academy was once a cornerstone of Liberia’s education system.
The school produced some of the nation’s most distinguished leaders, including former Senate President Pro Tempore Charles Walker Brumskine and former Chief Justice Frances Johnson-Morris, among many others.
In his address, Jeety emphasized that his in-kind donation is deeply rooted in his conviction that education is central to Liberia’s transformation.
“This is a commitment rooted in a belief that a better Liberia is possible, and that education is the key to unlocking Liberia’s huge potential,” he said.
“The task of reconstruction is not a sentimental exercise, but a responsibility—an obligation to the future we cannot afford to miss.”
Although an Indian by nationality, Mr. Sachdeva reaffirmed his strong emotional connection to Liberia, describing himself as “a Liberian by heart.”
He noted that the revival of Suehn Industrial Academy carries profound national significance beyond the rebuilding of physical structures.
“The fall of Suehn Industrial Academy means we lose more than buildings; we lose memory, continuity, and the pathways that connect one generation to the next,” he stated.
Jeety further reflected on the impact of philanthropy, noting that the greatest privilege of his life lies in transforming lives that may never know his name, yet will live better because of the difference made.
With the high cost of construction materials posing a major challenge nationwide, Jeety’s in-kind donation is considered especially significant and timely.
Organizers say it will go a long way in stabilizing and rebuilding sections of the academy that are still standing.
While Jeety’s donation was unmatched, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sara Beysolow-Nyanti, on behalf of herself and her siblings, pledged US$5,000, making her the second-highest donor of the evening.
Altogether, funds and materials committed during the gala totaled just over US$23,000.
The Suehn Legacy Circle has made clear that the goal of the restoration is not to preserve the academy merely as a historical monument, but to return it to full operational status.
Organizers envision the reborn institution as a center for character-based education grounded in discipline, compassion, and national service.
Speaking earlier at the event, LeRoy Boikai of the Suehn Legacy Circle stressed that Suehn’s history belongs not to a few individuals, but to the nation as a whole.
“Suehn’s story is not one of private memory, but of national inheritance,” he said, calling for collective responsibility and sustained investment in education.
Dr. Boikai added that Liberia stands at a critical moment where collaboration and long-term commitment are essential, noting that rebuilding Suehn Industrial Academy presents a unique opportunity to restore an institution already rich in trust, identity, and legacy.
“This evening marks more than a fundraising event,” he concluded. “It marks the launch of a restoration pathway grounded in partnership, transparency, and collective national interest.”
With renewed momentum and strong philanthropic leadership, the long-silent halls of Suehn Industrial Academy may soon once again echo with learning—restoring not just a school, but a vital piece of Liberia’s educational heritage.
