Samuel K. Doe Legacy Foundation Launches SKD Pathway Program Scholarship in Grand Gedeh

Monrovia, Liberia - September 18, 2025 The Samuel K. Doe Legacy Foundation proudly announces the official launch of its SKD Pathway Program Scholarship, an initiative dedicated to advancing education and empowering the next generation of Liberian leaders.

This effort is being made possible through a new partnership between the Samuel K. Doe Legacy Foundation and Grand Gedeh University, led by its President, Dr. Eric Z. M. Gbotoe.

As part of its inaugural efforts, the Pathway Program will provide scholarships and full tuition coverage for 20 students enrolled at Grand Gedeh University's newly established Samuel K. Doe College of Agriculture and Forestry. This groundbreaking initiative reflects the Foundation's commitment to strengthening Liberia's agricultural sector by investing in the minds of young scholars who will one day lead in innovation, food security, and national development.

In addition to supporting university students, the Pathway Program has pledged a donation of more than $3,000 to the three districts of Grand Gedeh County. These funds will directly provide financial assistance to over 1,500 elementary, secondary, and high school students, ensuring that children from underserved communities have the opportunity to pursue education without barriers.

Speaking on behalf of the Foundation, Co-Administrator Ruth Doe-King emphasized the importance of this milestone:

"The SKD Pathway Program represents our deep commitment to education as the cornerstone of national progress. By supporting both higher education and grassroots learning, we are investing not only in individual students but also in the long-term prosperity of Liberia. This initiative honors the legacy of the late President Samuel K. Doe by uplifting future generations and equipping them with the tools to transform their communities.

UPDATE!!!

Liberia to Dedicate First Utility-Scale Solar Farm Set to Deliver 20MW of Clean Energy in Liberia

The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) has announced that the country’s first-ever utility-scale solar farm will be commissioned in November 2025, a project expected to add 20 megawatts of electricity to the national grid and expand access to power across the country.

The facility, located in Harrisburg, Montserrado County, was launched in October 2024 when President Joseph Boakai broke ground on what is now considered a landmark step in addressing Liberia’s chronic power shortages, particularly during the dry season when hydropower production declines.

BREAKING NEWS: Government Prosecutions Orders New Medical Exams at AMI Amid Torture Allegations; Defense Lawyers Push Back

In a dramatic escalation of the Capitol Building arson trial, Government Prosecutions has ordered fresh medical examinations for six defendants at AMI Expeditionary Healthcare Medical Center, following dissatisfaction with the initial report.

The move comes amid explosive claims by the accused that they were tortured and sodomized while in state custody.

Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie ruled that the examinations must be conducted at AMI’s Sinkor facility and completed with all costs covered by the Ministry of Justice.

However, defense lawyers argue that AMI is no more independent, given its alleged ties to both the Ministry of Justice and the Liberia National Police—the very institutions accused of abuse.

Defense attorneys, now consulting on next steps, have raised serious concerns over AMI’s impartiality. They cited the case of co-defendant Thomas Etheridge, who collapsed during interrogation and was treated at AMI, where he was diagnosed with malaria—despite visible signs of physical trauma.

PRESS RELEASE!

CBL Launches Nationwide “Clean Note Campaign” – “ the Liberian Dollar, Preserving Our Pride”

Monrovia, Liberia – September 17, 2025 – The Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) is taking a bold action to protect the Liberian dollar with the launch of a nationwide “Clean Note Campaign: Our Money, Our Pride.” The official launch is set for Friday, September 19, 2025, at the Rally Time Market in Monrovia.

This initiative is in response to the alarming rate of mutilation of the Liberian dollar banknotes and coins, caused by poor handling practices such as squeezing, writing, stamping, stapling, exposing notes to dirt and moisture and melting coins; damaging up to about L$1B of the new family of banknotes printed in 2022.

These habits not only undermine the appearance of the national currency but also cost the country millions of dollars to replace.

With the Clean Note Campaign, the CBL is putting every Liberian at the center of a movement to preserve the dignity of the nation’s currency, strengthen confidence in the economy, and promote national identity.

Ahead of the launch, campaign teams will hit the streets with a two-day float across Monrovia, using music, drama, and community engagement to drive home the message: “Our Money, Our Pride—Handle It with Care.” Those damaging the currency risk a fine of five hundred thousand Liberian dollars or serve a two-year jail term.

The campaign has already secured strong backing from key national stakeholders, including all nine Commercial Banks, the Liberian Marketing Association, the Liberia Business Association, the National Association of Foreign Exchange Bureaus, National Street Vendors and Scratch Card Dealers Association of Liberia, and the Merged Federation of Motorcyclists and Tricyclist Union of Liberia.

These groups have pledged to mobilize their members to take ownership of the campaign and push its message nationwide.

CBL Executive Governor, Henry F. Saamoi made it clear that the campaign is about more than just preserving paper notes:“The Liberian dollar is a symbol of our sovereignty. When we disrespect our money, we disrespect ourselves as a people. The Clean Note Campaign challenges every Liberian to take responsibility, not only to safeguard the value of our currency but to show pride in our national identity.”

Governor Saamoi stated that the launch is just the beginning of a sustained, nationwide push: “This is not a one-off event. We are rolling out radio programs, community theater, grassroots outreach, and direct market engagements across Liberia. Whether you are a vendor, taxi driver, student, or office worker, this campaign speaks to you. Together, we can save the country millions in printing costs and demonstrate nationalism and respect to the Liberian dollar.”

The CBL is urging the public to actively support the campaign, join the awareness activities, and become champions of the message: “Our Money, Our Pride – Handle It with Care.”
