Former LDEA Deputy Directors Face $3M Libel Lawsuit

By Melvin Jackson

The Sixth Judicial Circuit Civil Law Court, under the jurisdiction of Resident Judge Kennedy Peabody, has summoned former Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA) Deputy Director for Operations Hassan Fadiga and his brother, Hussein Fadiga, over allegations of libel with general damages amounting to $3 million.

According to our judicial correspondent, the summons follows a complaint filed by former LDEA Director General Abraham Kromah. Kromah is requesting the court to adjudge the Fadigas with special damages totaling $2 million.

In a ten-count petition, Kromah claims that the defendants libeled him for $2 million, and accused Hassan of being incompetent and delinquent in handling dangerous drugs and other contraband within Liberian society. Kromah also alleges that Hassan created a parallel structure disregarding Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) that govern all paramilitary agencies, showing a lack of knowledge on how subordinate officers should report to their superiors with due courtesy.

Regarding Hussein Fadiga, Kromah contends that as Hassan's twin brother, who claims to be a social commentator and political analyst, Hussein joined his brother's misinformation campaign. Kromah alleges that Hussein falsely accused him on several radio talk shows, including but not limited to Spoon Talk-show, of having a close relationship with a notorious Nigerian drug baron named โ€œJapan.โ€ Kromah asserts that the arrest, detention, and subsequent prosecution of Japan were planned, organized, directed, and spearheaded by him before Fadigaโ€™s appointment as LDEA Deputy Director-General.

Kromah pledges to present evidence showing that at the time of Japan's arrest, Hassan Fadiga was not an LDEA official.

The former LDEA boss seeks the court to grant him $2 million in damages, representing contract losses sustained due to the defendants' actions.

LACC Rejects NOCAL CEO Dennisโ€™ Delay Request, Demands Immediate Appearance in Corruption Probe

By Socrates Smythe Saywon

Monrovia, Liberia - The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) has denied a request from Rustonlyn Suacoco Dennis, Chief Executive Officer of the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL), for an extended appearance date regarding allegations of financial impropriety and corruption under her leadership.

Madam Dennis had initially been scheduled to appear before the LACC on February 6, 2025, but requested a postponement until February 12, citing travel outside Monrovia. In response, LACC Executive Chairperson Cllr. Alexandra Kormah Zoe acknowledged her request but rejected any further delay, ordering Dennis to appear on Monday, February 10, 2025, at 11:00 AM. The LACC warned that failure to comply would result in her arrest.

The allegations against Dennis stem from financial activities at NOCAL between July and December 2024. According to LACC sources, the investigation focuses on the purchase of a 2024 MG RX8 SUV from Cactus Motors at an inflated price of $75,000 when the actual cost was reportedly $45,000. The LACC claims Dennis conspired with the vendor to divert the remaining $30,000, which was allegedly used to acquire another vehicle registered under her company, Tanti Group of Company.

Additionally, the LACC is probing a $585,000 consultancy contract awarded to West Africa Geo-Services (WAGS). Investigators believe that $300,000 of this amount was paid in violation of the Public Procurement and Concessions Commission (PPCC) Act and the Public Financial Management (PFM) Law. The inquiry also includes allegations that Dennis mismanaged funds designated for NOCALโ€™s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, allegedly redirecting thousands of dollars to reward political supporters in District #4, Montserrado County.

On Deportation
While the Government of Liberia has not been officially informed about the mass deportation of Liberians in line with the new immigration policies of the US Government, it is aware that four deportees, whose processing commenced long before the Trump administrationโ€™s pronouncement regarding mass deportation, will be arriving this week.
Proactively, the Minister of Foreign Affairs has written the US Secretary of State requesting a meeting to dialogue on alternatives to deportation.
The Government of Liberia is also engaging with the US Congress at state and federal levels to seek alternatives to deportation.
The Government notes that the Embassy of Liberia near Washington convened a virtual meeting with Liberians in the United States which was moderated by Liberiaโ€™s Ambassador to the US, Dr. Al Hassan Conteh and the Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Sara Beysolow Nyanti. The meeting concluded with more active and coordinated responses through diplomatic channels on the mass deportation issue.
At home, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains engaged with the US Ambassador accredited near Monrovia whom the government lauds for his openness in these engagements.
An Inter-Agency Task Force has been activated to plan for any possible mass deportation of Liberians. It is chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and includes the Ministries of Finance and Development Planning, Justice, Internal Affairs and Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism.
Other agencies on the Taskforce are the Liberia National Police, Liberia Immigration Service and the Liberia Refugees, Repatriation and Resettlement Commission.
On the Suspension of USAIDโ€™s Activities
His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr has mandated sector leads in agriculture, education, health and rule of law institutions to immediately conduct impact analysis on the loss of funding from USAID and recommend mitigation plans.
Conclusion
President Boakai and the Government of Liberia are concerned about the welfare of its Liberian citizens whether at home or abroad, and are doing everything possible to work with the countryโ€™s traditional partner, the United States, to find a common ground on the deportation issue and the suspension of USAIDโ€™s activities in Liberia.
It is important to note, that Liberia has no authority over and above policy decisions of the United States. Liberia can only engage, dialogue, negotiate and adopt strategies and approaches on these matters in the best interest of Liberians.
Signed:
Jerolinmek Matthew Piah

The Chair of the House Committee on Information, Broadcasting, and Tourism, Hon. Bernard Blue Benson Jr., has reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for the reestablishment of the historic Kendeja National Cultural Centre to restore and preserve Liberiaโ€™s rich cultural heritage.
Speaking at the launch of Arts and Culture Gallery at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) on Thursday in Monrovia, Hon. Benson emphasized the significance of Kendeja as a national treasure and a key cultural and tourism destination.
โ€œKendeja National Cultural Centre was an iconic institution dedicated to preserving and promoting Liberiaโ€™s rich traditions. Established in 1975, it became a renowned hub for cultural expression, offering vibrant performances in traditional music and dance, as well as exhibitions of indigenous arts and crafts,โ€ he stated.
Hon. Benson underscored the need for renewed national efforts to restore the cultural centre, which played a crucial role in showcasing Liberiaโ€™s diverse heritage while attracting both local and international tourists.
He assured that as Chair of the House Committee on Information, Broadcasting, and Tourism, he would champion policies and legislative actions aimed at reviving the landmark institution.
โ€œThe preservation of our culture is essential to our national identity and economic growth through tourism. Reviving Kendeja will not only honor our artistic traditions but also create opportunities for cultural education, tourism, and job creation,โ€ he added.
The lawmaker called on stakeholders, including the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism, as well as private sector actors, to support initiatives that will facilitate the restoration of the historic cultural centre.
The reestablishment of Kendeja would serve as a significant step in revitalizing Liberiaโ€™s cultural landscape and strengthening the countryโ€™s creative industries.

Legal Update:
Defense Claims AI-Generated Evidence in High-Profile Arson Case!
Monrovia City Court Stipendiary Magistrate L. Ben Barco entertained final arguments in the alleged arson case involving defendants Thomas Etheridge and Eric Sasay. During Thursday's arguments, defense lawyers prayed the court to suppress evidence and return co-defendant Etheridge's cell phone, asserting it was acquired illegally.
The defense also alleged that the prosecution's audio recording was AI-generated and obtained by state security during the investigation. Cllr. Jonathan Massaquoi, one of the defense lawyers, emphasized the lack of forensic evidence to constitute the best evidence.
The defense cited Chapter 12 Section 11.10 of the criminal procedure law, which provides grounds for unlawful search and seizure, arguing there was no probable cause for the warrant.
โ€œThere was no forensic analysis conducted on the chloride bottle to determine the fingerprints of the alleged defendants on what part each of them plays in the commission or burning of the bottle as charged,โ€ Massaquoi stated.
Prosecution lawyers countered, revealing that their investigation concluded arson was committed and presented evidence alleging that defendants were preparing a petrol bomb.
Counselor Richard Scott of the prosecution outlined evidence of criminal conspiracy, attempted murder, and other crimes committed by Etheridge, Sasay, and others at large.
Responding to the defenseโ€™s request to suppress evidence, the prosecution noted that the defense failed to object to the evidence during the trial until the final argument.
Magistrate Barco has reserved ruling on the matter for next Wednesday, February 12, 2025.
