Residents of Bushrod Island lined the streets on Friday, singing, dancing, and chanting pro-government slogans as they welcomed President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. to officially break ground for the 1.9-kilometer Japan Freeway Extension Project from the Freeport of Monrovia to the Gabriel Tucker Bridge. Many residents praised the Boakai administration for advancing major road infrastructure projects they believe will improve transportation and economic activities in the area.
Japan's Ambassador to Liberia, Hiroshi Yoshimoto, joined JICA Liberia's Country Representative, officials of the National Port Authority, cabinet ministers, lawmakers, and members of the diplomatic corps at the ceremony. The Japanese side described the project as another milestone in the strong bilateral relationship between Japan and Liberia.
President Boakai said the project forms part of his administration's ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development, which prioritizes infrastructure development to stimulate economic growth, encourage private-sector investment, and create jobs. He noted that the groundbreaking follows the recent launch of the 255-kilometer western Liberia road project and the Mendikorma–Voinjama Highway.
The President also called on residents and businesses along the project corridor to cooperate with contractors during construction and urged the Ministry of Public Works to ensure the project is completed professionally and on schedule before officially declaring the Japan Freeway Extension Project launched.
