FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Smile FM Resumes Broadcast after Mediation by PUL and ALICOR

(May 19, 2025): Smile FM in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County has resumed broadcast services following two days of mediation by the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) and the Association of Liberia Community Radio Station (ALICOR).

The mediation from 18-19 May 2025 led to the amicable and successful resolution of the disputes over the Board of Advisors and the position of Station Manager of Smile FM, a community radio station.

The station was shutdown on May 5, 2025 after violent confrontations involving a group of Grand Gedeh citizens for and against the two competing Boards and two Station Managers, each in possession of separate Constitution and By-Laws of Smile FM.

In resolving the disputes, the PUL and ALICOR negotiated the dissolution of all contending Boards, leading to the subsequent transparent reconstitution of the Board of Advisors by the nine recognized institutions making up the Board.

Also, an Acting Station Manager, Anthony Flahn, was appointed to manage Smile FM for three months, following which a Station Manager proper would be installed after a transparent and credible recruitment by the newly reconstituted Board.

The new Board of Advisors was also tasked to review and reconcile the two Constitutions and By-Laws of Smile FM, ensuring a unified and credible Constitution is adopted, taking into consideration best practices.

The PUL and ALICOR mediation team included Mr Julius Kanubah, President, PUL; Mr Teah Doegmah, Chairman, Board of Advisors, ALICOR; Mr Lawrence Tokpah, Vice President for Operations, ALICOR; and Ms Christina Sonpon, Station Manager, Radio Kakata in Margibi County.

The mediation trip by the PUL and ALICOR was undertaken jointly with Representative Jeremiah Sokan of District Number One, where Smile FM is located.

The PUL and ALICOR expressed thanks and appreciation to Representative Sokan, Superintendent Alex Grant, all current and former officials and citizens of Grand Gedeh County who approached the PUL and ALICOR to lead the mediation because of the independence and credibility of both institutions.

PUL President Julius Kanubah and ALICOR Board Chair Teah Doegmah emphasized during the mediation that Smile FM is a community radio station and there must be no political interference in its operations and management.

Meanwhile, PUL and ALICOR commended journalist Solo Uriah Lewis and Madam Jesadeh Barzon, for their years of services as Station Manager and Board Chair of Smile FM respectively, praising them for fully cooperating and supporting the mediation.

Smile FM can now smile again, broadcasting contents in the interest of the community.

Signed:
Julius Kanubah

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MONROVIA Liberia - May 5, 2025

The Association of Liberia Community Radio (ALICOR) is deeply troubled by the ongoing harassment and intimidation directed against the management and staff of Smile FM by Superintendent Alex Grant and his collaborators.

ALICOR is particularly alarmed by the recent action taken by Superintendent Grant, which led to the shutdown of Smile FM -a community radio station that serves as an altemative voice for the people of Grand Gedeh County. This action appears to be an attempt to silence independent media through the use of political power and influence.

According to ALICOR President Hector Mulbah, it is disappointing that Superintendent Grant continues to target Smile FM despite several dialogues involving the Ministry of Intemal Affairs, the Grand Gedeh Legislative Caucus, and the Grand Gedean Citizens
Association in the Americas.

ALICOR is taken aback by the Superintendent's action, especially as it contradicts the recent commitment made by President Joseph Boakai during the Presidential Media Dinner, where he reaffirmed his administration's commitment to press freedom.

ALICOR condemns the arbitrary closure of Smile FM and views it as a direct attack on press freedom, We call for the immediate reopening of the station and urge the relevant authorities to guarantee the safety and protection of the jouralists involved.

ALICOR calls on all journalists across Liberia to stand in solidarity with Smile FM.

Ms. Jenneh S. Kemokai is an enterprising Liberian journalist, public administrator, and passionate mentoring adolescent girls and womenโ€™s rights advocate with over 15 years of experience in community media.

Born and raised in Grand Cape Mount County, she began her career in 2008 as an intern at Radio Cape Mount. Her commitment and leadership quickly propelled her through the ranksโ€”becoming a reporter in 2010, later serving as Business Manager, and then taking on the role of Director of Programs, which she held for over four years. In 2022, she was appointed as the Station Manager of Radio Cape Mount.

Beyond her leadership at the station, Jenneh has participated in several prestigious fellowships and international programs.

She served as a media fellow during the 2023 General and Presidential elections under Internews with support from USAID and was also selected as a fellow advocating for persons living with disabilities under the same program.

Her commitment to environmental reporting was recognized in 2023 when she was named Environmental Reporter of the Year by the Association of Community Radios (ALICOR). Following the ALICORโ€™s award, she was selected in 2024 by the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia to participate in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) in the United States.

In 2025, Jenneh further represented Liberia internationally when she was chosen by the African Women in Dialogue (AfWID) to attend a weeklong journalist exchange and conference in South Africa.

Jenneh holds a bachelorโ€™s degree in public administration with a minor in Communications and Media Studies from the University of Liberia.

She currently serves as the Grand Cape Mount County Correspondent for the Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS), where she continues to elevate local voices and promote social change through impactful journalism.
