Team journalRAGE spent the last week between Ganta and Tappitta training journalists covering the Senatorial bi-election in Nimba County. This is under the Internews in Liberia Liberia Media Empowerment Project funded by the European Union in Liberia.
Ours has been to make sure the voice of everyone is heard, whether rich or poor, able or not physically able, visually impaired or hard of hearing, workers or sex workers, minority or minirities in sex, religious or ethnic minority, etc.
During the course of theses trainings, we encourage our colleagues to look beyond their own biases and give a coverage to everyone because they, too, have a stake in Nimba.
The reception has been nothing short of amazing.
And while it has been, it has also proven to be a learning experience for all of us.
For example, there’s a town where no one is allowed to wear glasses. There’s another town where a person can’t wear red shirt. In another town, it’s against the custom to bury in the village. All bodies are interred on the outskirts of the town.
So while we did provide education, we were also the recipients of it. A win-win situation for everyone involved on the project.
