ECOFEPA Calls for Greater Investment in Women’s Participation in Global Trade

MONROVIA, LIBERIA — The ECOWAS Female Parliamentarians Association (ECOFEPA) has called for increased investment in women’s participation in global trade, political readiness, and export opportunities across the West African region.

Speaking at a conference held in Liberia, the First Vice President of ECOFEPA, Hon. Zainab Gimba, urged ECOWAS governments to place greater emphasis on empowering women and creating opportunities for them to actively participate in international trade.

Hon. Gimba said governments must invest more in programs and initiatives that advance women’s economic participation, particularly in global trade and export markets.

She emphasized that greater support for women could help strengthen economic growth while providing women with increased opportunities to contribute to the development of their respective countries.

Also speaking at the conference, the Speaker of the 55th National Legislature of Liberia, Hon. Richard N. Koon, thanked the leadership of ECOFEPA for choosing Liberia as the host country for the conference.

Speaker Koon welcomed the initiative and pledged his commitment to working with ECOFEPA to advance issues affecting women and promote greater female participation in national and international development.

The Speaker described himself as a “HeForShe” advocate and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting women’s empowerment and working alongside the association.

He said collaboration between Liberia’s Legislature and ECOFEPA would be important in promoting policies and initiatives that create greater opportunities for women.

The conference brought together parliamentarians and stakeholders to discuss issues surrounding women’s participation in trade, economic development, political readiness, and export opportunities within the ECOWAS region.

Jurry Says Representatives Have Received Benefits, Rejects Claims of Withholding

MONROVIA, LIBERIA — Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Ways, Means, Finance and Development Planning and Maryland County District #1 Representative, Hon. P. Mike Jurry, says members of the House of Representatives have received their benefits, rejecting claims that the leadership of the House withheld or misappropriated lawmakers’ entitlements.

Speaking in an interview with Footage Africa Magazine, Rep. Jurry said the House leadership has been working closely with the Executive Branch, particularly the Ministry of Finance, to ensure that lawmakers receive their benefits.

According to him, the process of paying government officials’ benefits can take time because it involves several administrative procedures.

“The leadership of the House of Representatives did not eat anyone’s benefits. That information is misleading,” Rep. Jurry said.

He explained that members of the House had been waiting for their benefits while the leadership engaged the Executive Branch to facilitate the payments.

“We have been working with the Executive to pay their benefits over the months, but you and I know these things take some time,” he said.

Rep. Jurry further disclosed that he personally visited the Ministry of Finance on several occasions to follow up on the matter and ensure that the concerns of lawmakers were addressed.

He called on Liberians to understand that the House of Representatives remains united despite occasional political disagreements among lawmakers.

“One thing Liberians need to understand is this: We are united at the House of Representatives,” Jurry said. “Yes, sometimes we can have political disagreements because we were elected by our people to work in their best interest.”

The Maryland County District #1 Representative said disagreements among lawmakers should not automatically be interpreted as a breakdown in the leadership of the House.

He emphasized that representatives were elected by their respective constituencies to serve the interests of the Liberian people and that differences of opinion are sometimes part of the democratic process.

Rep. Jurry also pointed to the attendance of lawmakers at the Capitol as evidence of their continued participation in the work of the Legislature.

“Footage Africa Magazine, you saw for yourself today, over 45 members were present for the opening today,” he said.

His comments come amid discussions surrounding lawmakers’ benefits and the level of unity within the House of Representatives.

Rep. Jurry maintained that the leadership remains committed to working with relevant government institutions to address the concerns of members while ensuring that the House continues to carry out its constitutional responsibilities.

Leadership Comes With Responsibility and Ability to Transform People’s Lives — Hon. Taylor

MONROVIA, LIBERIA — October 8, 2026: Montserrado County District #10 Representative hopeful, Hon. Thomas Taylor, says leadership comes with responsibility and the ability to transform the lives of citizens.

Speaking on his vision for District #10, Hon. Taylor said leaders seeking public office often make promises to citizens during campaigns but, according to him, some fail to fulfill those commitments after being elected.

“Leadership comes with responsibility and the ability to transform people’s lives,” Taylor said. “Past and current leaders, when they are contesting, promise all the good things. But after winning, they forget about those promises and commitments they made.”

Taylor said he intends to remain committed to the principles he is currently presenting to voters if elected as Representative of District #10.

“I am a real man who have never changed and can never change after becoming Representative in the coming months,” he stated.

He said he understands what residents of District #10 need and want, adding that Liberia must change the way it approaches leadership and development if citizens are to see meaningful improvements.

“I understand my people’s needs and wants. We need to change the way we do things in this country if we want better things to happen for our country,” Taylor said.

Calls for Resolution of District #10 Representation

Hon. Taylor also expressed concern about what he described as the prolonged absence of an elected representative for Montserrado County District #10.

He called on the court to resolve the matter, saying residents deserve representation in the 55th National Legislature.

“We can’t be without a representative and not represented at the 55th National Legislature for that long,” Taylor said.

He urged the relevant authorities to take steps toward resolving the situation in the interest of District #10 residents.

“We are hoping something can be done shortly in our district’s best interest,” he added.

Taylor’s comments come as he presents his vision of leadership and public service to residents ahead of the expected contest for the District #10 seat.
