LDEA Yet to Identify Owners of US$12M Drug Seizure at RIA

The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) says it has not yet identified the owners of six boxes containing co***ne valued at more than US$12 million recently discovered at the Roberts International Airport (RIA).

Speaking to DN-News, LDEA Chief of Public Affairs Olando Demey disclosed that the drugs were discovered during a routine luggage inspection at the airport.

Reports indicate that more than 10 persons are currently in LDEA custody undergoing investigation, including a female airport worker who conducted the scanning procedure that led to the discovery. Investigators say the woman claimed she does not know the owner of the boxes.

According to additional reports, the total number of boxes shipped through the airport was ten and were reportedly en route to Europe on Brussels Airlines.

Intelligence sources further revealed that four of the boxes had already left the country before the seizure was made.

Demey also stated that some of the suspected conspirators had already traveled out of Liberia before the drugs were discovered.

The LDEA Public Affairs Director further revealed that the airport’s Logistics Director and several other individuals have been arrested as part of the ongoing investigation.

Meanwhile, many Liberians are awaiting answers regarding who imported the huge consignment of drugs into the country.

• Swiss footballer Embolo's visa was put under review and he was only able to join his team days later.

• Iraqi national team player Aymen Hussein was held for questioning for nearly 7 hours upon entering the United States.

• The Iranian national team spent days dealing with visa procedures at the U.S. Consulate in Türkiye. The U.S. only allowed them entry on match days. Fifteen members of the delegation were denied visas.

• Omar Abdulkadir Artan, named CAF's Best African Referee of 2025, was denied a visa. Despite travelling to the U.S. with a diplomatic passport, he was refused entry and sent back. FIFA announced that he will not be able to officiate at the tournament.

• The South African national team arrived in the United States much later than planned because part of the delegation was not granted visas.

• Members of the Senegal national team staff were forced to remove their shoes and subjected to lengthy searches, sparking accusations of racism.

• The Uzbekistan national team was searched with bomb-sniffing dogs and the footage went viral in international media.

• Some Scottish supporters, despite being eligible to enter the U.S. visa-free under the ESTA programme, had their travel authorisations revoked just days before departure.

• Many supporters who had already bought tickets and booked accommodation had their visa applications rejected, resulting in financial losses.

An outbreak of a new virus, Nipah virus has been confirmed in West Bengal, India. Some of the people infected are regular citizens, while others are healthcare workers who may have caught the virus in hospitals.

Nipah is a virus that can spread from animals through fruit bats and also pigs to humans. It can also spread between people through close contact. There is no specific medicine or vaccine to cure it yet. Symptoms can start with fever and breathing problems and, in severe cases, can cause swelling of the brain.

The virus can be deadly, with reported death rates as high as 75%.

Because of the outbreak, some Asian countries have brought back health checks at airports and border crossings. Health experts are asking people to stay alert, follow safety measures, and help stop the virus from spreading further.

According to a Liberian-based Nigerian artist, Kjr Sweet, his management paid MLMA Artist of the Year King Dennis USD 700 for a verse on his song “Booty” and also to help promote the song by posting about it when it drops.

Unfortunately, since recording the song, King Dennis hasn’t shown any interest in it. He didn’t post about it or even say anything about it, in fact, he refused to be part of the song promotional video and requested for the guy management to buy him outfit and carry car to pick him up.
