INSPECTOR GENERAL ORDERS EXPANDED INVESTIGATION AND ADMINISTRATIVE REVIEW INTO THE DEATH OF CHARLES KOLLIE
The Liberia National Police (LNP) informs the public that Inspector General of Police Gregory O. W. Coleman has ordered an expanded investigation and comprehensive administrative review into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Charles Kollie.
This action follows the Inspector General’s recent visit to B**g County, where he met with members of the bereaved family, engaged local authorities, and reviewed preliminary findings arising from the initial inquiry. The decision reflects the commitment of the Liberia National Police to ensuring that all aspects of the matter are thoroughly examined in a transparent, professional, and accountable manner.
Police records indicate that Mr. Kollie was arrested on April 30, 2026, in connection with allegations relating to criminal conspiracy and theft of property. He was subsequently released from police custody on May 4, 2026, pending the continuation of the investigation. His subsequent death has generated legitimate public concern regarding the circumstances surrounding his release and events occurring thereafter.
In response, the Inspector General has directed a detailed administrative and investigative review to examine compliance with established detention and release procedures, the decision-making process applied in granting Mr. Kollie’s release, the conduct and supervisory responsibilities of officers involved at various stages of the matter, and any institutional or procedural gaps requiring corrective measures.
The Professional Standards Division (PSD) has accordingly been directed to broaden the scope of its inquiry in coordination with relevant authorities to ensure that the review process remains objective, evidence-based, and comprehensive.
The Liberia National Police will continue to rely on medical, forensic, and other evidentiary assessments in determining the cause and manner of death as part of the ongoing investigative process.
The LNP wishes to reassure the public that this review is intended not only to establish the full circumstances surrounding Mr. Kollie’s death, but also to reinforce institutional integrity, accountability, and public confidence in the administration of justice. Where any procedural violations, misconduct, or lapses in professional responsibility are established, appropriate administrative and legal actions will be taken in accordance with the laws of Liberia and applicable police regulations.
Inspector General Coleman has extended sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Kollie and reaffirmed the Liberia National Police’s commitment to fairness, professionalism, due process, and respect for the rights and dignity of all persons.
The Liberia National Police urges the public to remain calm, refrain from speculation or misinformation, and allow the investigative process to proceed independently and professionally. The public will be updated as additional credible information becomes available.
