Liberia National Police to Hold Media Relations Workshop to Strengthen Collaboration with Journalists

MONROVIA, Liberia – June 3, 2026 – The Liberia National Police (LNP) will on Thursday launch a two-day Media-Police Relations Workshop aimed at strengthening cooperation and understanding between law enforcement officers and journalists across Liberia.

Organized by the LNP’s Press and Public Affairs Division, the workshop will run from June 4–5 in Monrovia and bring together media practitioners and police personnel for discussions on improving communication, transparency, and information sharing in the public interest.

According to the police, the initiative seeks to foster stronger professional relationships between the media and law enforcement while promoting accurate, timely, and responsible dissemination of information to the public.

Facilitators from the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) and the Liberia National Police will lead a series of presentations and interactive sessions covering media ethics, strategic communication, crisis reporting, public information management, and best practices for police-media engagement.

The workshop comes as both institutions seek to enhance public confidence through greater transparency and accountability. Organizers say the forum will provide an opportunity for open dialogue on challenges affecting police-media relations and explore ways to improve collaboration in serving the public.

The initiative aligns with the vision of Inspector General of Police Gregory O. W. Coleman, who has emphasized the importance of strengthening institutional partnerships, building public trust, and advancing the professional development of the Liberia National Police.

Police authorities noted that the media remains a key partner in promoting public safety, educating citizens, and supporting national development. They expressed hope that the workshop will lead to stronger cooperation and a renewed commitment to constructive engagement between journalists and law enforcement officers.

Liberia Among First Beneficiaries of China’s Zero-Tariff Policy as Exports Surge

MONROVIA, Liberia – Liberia is emerging as one of the earliest and most significant beneficiaries of China’s zero-tariff policy, a trade initiative aimed at expanding market access for products from developing countries.

China began implementing zero tariffs on 100 percent of tariff lines for Liberian products in December 2024, making Liberia one of the first countries to benefit from the policy.

Chinese authorities say they remain committed to working with Liberia to ensure the country maximizes the opportunities created by the initiative and expands its exports to the Chinese market.

During a recent visit to China, Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, welcomed the policy and expressed the government’s determination to take full advantage of the expanded trade access by increasing exports to China.

The impact of the policy is already being reflected in trade figures. According to Chinese customs statistics, Liberia’s exports to China reached approximately US$131 million in 2025, representing a 24 percent increase compared to the previous year. Natural rubber emerged as a key export commodity, generating US$17.44 million, an increase of more than 75 percent year-on-year.

Trade growth has accelerated further in 2026. During the first quarter alone, Liberia’s exports to China exceeded US$200 million, marking a dramatic increase of more than 30 times compared to the same period in 2025.

The figures highlight the growing economic partnership between Liberia and China and underscore the potential of the zero-tariff policy to boost Liberia’s export earnings, support local industries, and strengthen bilateral trade relations.

WAEC Dismisses Viral Social Media Post as Fake, Threatens Legal Action Against Refresh Liberia

MONROVIA, Liberia – The Liberia Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has strongly rejected a viral social media post published by Refresh Liberia, describing it as false and damaging to the reputations of both the examination body and the Liberia National Police (LNP).

In a statement issued Tuesday, June 2, WAEC said a Facebook post shared by Refresh Liberia on June 1 featured an image purporting to show candidates at an examination center being supervised by heavily armed police officers.

According to the Council, an analysis conducted using an Artificial Intelligence (AI) detection tool determined with 93 percent certainty that the image was AI-generated.

WAEC said the publication misrepresents the conduct of national examinations and creates a false impression of the security arrangements deployed at examination centers across the country.

“The Secretariat wants to state categorically that at no time has the Liberia National Police deployed more than one police officer at any of our examination centers, least to mention them being heavily armed as indicated in the post,” the statement said.

The Council emphasized that the image and accompanying claims are inaccurate and were intended to tarnish the hard-earned reputations of both WAEC and the Liberia National Police.

As a result, WAEC is demanding that Refresh Liberia immediately retract the post.

The examination body warned that failure to do so could leave the Secretariat with no option but to pursue legal action.

“The Secretariat is therefore calling on Refresh Liberia to immediately retract the post or will leave the Secretariat with no other alternative but to seek legal recourse,” the statement added.

The controversy comes amid ongoing national examinations, a period during which WAEC and security authorities work closely to ensure the integrity and smooth administration of tests across Liberia.

WAEC has not indicated whether formal legal proceedings have been initiated but says it remains prepared to take further action if the disputed post is not withdrawn.

NIR Rejects Claims of Outsourcing National ID System, Defends Partnership with Austrian Firm OSD

MONROVIA, Liberia – The National Identification Registry (NIR) has dismissed reports suggesting that the Government of Liberia has outsourced the country's national identification system to Austrian technology company OSD, describing the claims as false, misleading, and intended to undermine ongoing reforms within the institution.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, June 2, the NIR said recent media reports alleging that control of Liberia’s National Biometric Identification System (NBIS) had been handed over to a foreign company were inaccurate and failed to reflect the nature of the government’s partnership arrangement.

The Registry clarified that the Government of Liberia, through the NIR, initiated a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) proposal aimed at attracting major corporate investment to modernize the country's national identification infrastructure.

According to the NIR, the investment will provide critical funding to upgrade ICT equipment, strengthen system capabilities, improve logistics, and support a nationwide mass enrollment campaign designed to register Liberia’s entire population within approximately 18 months.

“The government of Liberia has not outsourced the NIR,” the institution stated, emphasizing that the Registry remains solely responsible for managing the national identification system and safeguarding citizens’ data.

The NIR explained that OSD’s role under the proposed arrangement is limited to providing technical solutions and technological support for the NBIS, while all enrollment activities and data management responsibilities will remain under the authority of the Registry.

The institution further stressed that all data collected through the national identification system remains the exclusive property of the Republic of Liberia.

Addressing concerns about the procurement process, the NIR disclosed that President Joseph Nyuma Boakai established a steering committee in 2025 to oversee the concession process and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

The Registry maintained that all procedures leading to the concession agreement were conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Public Procurement and Concessions Commission (PPCC).

Citing Section 102(d) of the amended and restated PPCC Act of 2026, the NIR noted that sole-source concessions may be granted in matters involving strategic national interests, national defense, or national security when it is not in the country's interest to have multiple bidders.

The institution argued that national identification and data protection are matters of national security and therefore fall within the legal framework permitting such arrangements.

The NIR also rejected allegations that the partnership agreement is being negotiated in secrecy, assuring the public that details of the agreement will be disclosed following its finalization and ratification by the National Legislature.

“At the moment, this is all the information we can provide. The public will be notified appropriately as the process progresses,” the Registry said.

The NIR concluded by urging citizens to rely only on information disseminated through its official and verifiable communication channels, reiterating its commitment to building an inclusive national identification system that ensures every Liberian has access to a secure and unique identity.

The National Identification Registry is responsible for designing and managing Liberia’s National Biometric Identification System and issuing National Identification Cards to Liberian citizens and legal residents. The institution says its work supports access to banking, telecommunications, elections, social protection programs, and other essential public services while strengthening national security through advanced biometric technology.

Liberty Party Marks 21 Years of Resilience, Unity and Political Relevance

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Liberty Party (LP) celebrated its 21st anniversary with a renewed call for unity, reconciliation, and political engagement, as party leaders and government officials reflected on the institution’s resilience and enduring role in Liberia’s democratic landscape.

The anniversary gathering brought together party executives, supporters, government representatives, and longtime members to commemorate more than two decades of political participation marked by both achievements and internal challenges.

Delivering the opening address, Senate Pro-Tempore and Liberty Party Political Leader Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence described the occasion as more than a celebration of the past, urging members to view it as a renewed commitment to the party’s future.

“This anniversary is not a finish line. It is a starting point. Let us leave here today renewed in strength, united in purpose, and ready for the future,” she told supporters.

Karnga-Lawrence emphasized that the Liberty Party was founded on principles rather than personalities, noting that unity, inclusion, and national development remain central to the party’s identity.

“We did not build this party on personalities. We built it on principles. Not on division, but on unity. Not on what divides Liberians, but on what unites us,” she said.

Reflecting on the party’s 21-year journey, she highlighted values such as loyalty, leadership, resilience, tolerance, forgiveness, and reconciliation as key factors behind the party’s survival through difficult periods.

The Liberty Party has experienced significant internal disputes in recent years, but Karnga-Lawrence credited reconciliation efforts for helping restore cohesion within the institution.

She challenged members to renew their commitment to the party’s mission, stressing that future political success would require organization, action, and collective responsibility.

“The future does not belong to those who wait. It belongs to those who organize, who show up, and who act,” she said, calling on the party’s executive committee, advisory committee, youth and women’s wings, diaspora chapters, and auxiliary groups to play active roles in shaping the party’s future.

Karnga-Lawrence also urged members to uphold the party’s vision of a Liberia where every county matters, every voice is heard, and every young person believes they have a place in national development.

Representing President Joseph Nyuma Boakai at the event, Minister of State for Special Services Samuel A. Stevquoah congratulated the Liberty Party on reaching the milestone and praised its contributions to Liberia’s political development.

“Twenty-one years in the establishment of a political party in Liberia is something significant to celebrate, and you deserve the recognition and honor you are receiving tonight,” Stevquoah said.

He acknowledged the Liberty Party’s role within the coalition that supported President Boakai’s successful bid for the presidency and highlighted the shared commitment between the Liberty Party and Unity Party to national development and good governance.

“The President deeply appreciates the indispensable role the Liberty Party has played in bringing the Unity Party government to power,” he stated.

Stevquoah also emphasized the importance of unity in governance, recalling President Boakai’s frequently cited proverb that collective effort can overcome even the greatest challenges.

“Political partnerships should not end with elections. Rather, they should continue through good governance and through a shared commitment to improving the lives of our people,” he added.

Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon, a prominent Liberty Party figure, reflected on the party’s history of overcoming adversity while maintaining its relevance in national politics.

Drawing laughter from attendees, Dillon compared the party’s future political ambitions to English football club Arsenal’s recent return to winning ways.

“One more year on 21 years will make it 22 years. That equals the number of years that Arsenal has not won a cup. Now that Arsenal has won a cup, Liberty Party will win the presidential election as well,” he joked.

Beyond the humor, Dillon underscored the importance of reconciliation and perseverance in preserving the party through periods of uncertainty and internal conflict.

“Our history is filled with joy, some sadness, rough roads, and tough times. But we are here together because of the grace of God and our resilience, our determination to demonstrate reconciliation,” he said.

Dillon also paid tribute to the late Cllr. Charles Walker Brumskine, the party’s founder and former standard-bearer, noting that the Liberty Party’s commitment to unity and dignity remains rooted in the values he established.

He commended Karnga-Lawrence’s leadership during difficult periods, describing her as a steady and resilient figure who helped guide the party through internal challenges.

The anniversary celebration concluded with renewed commitments from party leaders and supporters to strengthen the institution and position it for future electoral contests.

As the Liberty Party enters its third decade, speakers emphasized that its greatest achievement may not be electoral victories alone, but its ability to withstand internal divisions, reconcile differences, and emerge as a united political force.

“Liberty Party is one of the political institutions that went through significant turmoil, but has emerged united, reconciled, stronger, and more determined,” Dillon said.

US to Retain Liberia as Regional Visa Processing Hub Amid Major Embassy Restructuring Across Africa

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The United States government is preparing to significantly reduce the number of diplomatic missions across Africa authorized to process visa applications, but Liberia will remain among a select group of countries retaining full visa-processing services under a new regional system.

According to an internal U.S. State Department memorandum first reported by the Associated Press, the Trump administration plans to consolidate visa operations across the continent, reducing the number of embassies and consulates handling visa applications from nearly 50 to just 20 designated regional hubs.

The restructuring forms part of a broader effort by the administration to tighten immigration controls, streamline consular operations, and reduce visa issuance across several regions.

Under the plan, approved by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, visa processing services will be concentrated at selected diplomatic posts that will serve as regional centers for applicants from neighboring countries.

The U.S. Embassy in Monrovia is among the diplomatic missions expected to retain full visa-processing authority, making Liberia one of only 20 African countries selected to host a regional visa hub.

Other designated processing centers are expected to include embassies and consulates in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire; Accra, Ghana; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa; Dakar, Senegal; Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; Djibouti City, Djibouti; Kampala, Uganda; Kigali, Rwanda; Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo; Lagos, Nigeria; Lomé, Togo; Luanda, Angola; Malabo, Equatorial Guinea; Nairobi, Kenya; Port Louis, Mauritius; Praia, Cape Verde; and Yaoundé, Cameroon.

Three U.S. officials familiar with the proposal told the Associated Press that implementation could begin as early as June, although no official launch date has been announced.

The changes were reportedly discussed during a recent conference call involving American diplomats and consular officials across Africa, where embassy personnel were informed that visa services would be consolidated into regional processing centers.

The move comes amid a series of immigration policy measures introduced by the Trump administration, including heightened scrutiny of visa applicants, efforts to reduce visa overstays, staffing reductions at diplomatic missions, and expanded travel restrictions affecting several countries.

For Liberia, the decision to maintain visa-processing services in Monrovia is expected to provide significant relief for thousands of citizens seeking travel to the United States each year.

Liberia maintains one of the largest diaspora communities in the United States among African nations, with many Liberians traveling for family reunification, education, business engagements, medical treatment, and tourism.

Had the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia lost its visa-processing authority, applicants would likely have been required to travel to neighboring countries to complete visa interviews and other consular procedures, resulting in additional costs, logistical challenges, and longer processing times.

The inclusion of Liberia among the 20 designated regional hubs highlights the longstanding diplomatic relationship between Liberia and the United States and ensures continued access to essential visa services for Liberian citizens and foreign nationals residing in the country.

Analysis: Boakai's Warning on Burkinabè Influx Signals Growing Concerns Over Immigration, Land Use, and National Security

MONROVIA, Liberia – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai's latest remarks on the growing presence of Burkinabè nationals in Liberia have brought renewed national attention to an issue that has quietly expanded over the past decade and now sits at the intersection of immigration policy, natural resource management, agricultural development, and national security.

Addressing a Cabinet meeting, President Boakai described the influx of Burkinabè nationals as one of the most significant challenges facing his administration, citing estimates that more than 80,000 Burkinabè nationals are currently residing in Liberia. Many are reportedly engaged in mining and agricultural activities, sectors that continue to attract migrant labor due to increasing economic opportunities.

The President's comments reflect a growing concern within government circles that the scale of undocumented migration may be outpacing existing regulatory and monitoring mechanisms.

From Economic Migration to National Policy Challenge

Migration from Burkina Faso and other West African countries into Liberia is not a new phenomenon. For years, migrant workers have crossed regional borders in search of opportunities in artisanal mining, commercial farming, and other labor-intensive sectors.

What appears to be changing, however, is the scale and concentration of these settlements, particularly in remote regions where state oversight is often limited.

Government officials increasingly view the issue not merely as one of labor migration but as a broader governance challenge involving immigration control, land administration, environmental management, and community relations.

President Boakai emphasized that Liberia must know who is entering the country, why they are here, and whether their activities comply with national laws.

Mining Sector Under Increased Scrutiny

The President's concerns were amplified by a recent incident in Gbarpolu County, where predominantly Burkinabè miners allegedly resisted government inspectors conducting an anti-illegal mining operation.

Reports suggest that investigators encountered resistance during the exercise, prompting concerns about the ability of state authorities to effectively enforce regulations in some mining communities.

For policymakers, the incident raises important questions about the extent of government control in resource-rich regions and whether illegal mining activities are being facilitated by weak enforcement mechanisms.

The mining sector remains a critical contributor to Liberia's economy, but authorities have increasingly warned about illegal operations that deprive the government of revenue, damage the environment, and create opportunities for criminal activity.

Emerging Tensions in Agriculture

Beyond mining, concerns are also growing over the expansion of Burkinabè participation in Liberia's agricultural sector, particularly cocoa farming.

In several counties, reports indicate that foreign farmers have entered into long-term land lease arrangements with local communities and landowners. While such agreements can stimulate agricultural production and local economic activity, they have also generated disputes over land ownership, community consent, and the long-term impact on local populations.

Some community leaders have raised concerns that the rapid expansion of commercial farming activities by foreign nationals could contribute to land pressures and social tensions if not properly regulated.

The issue is particularly sensitive in a country where land ownership and access remain central to rural livelihoods and community identity.

Security Implications

Perhaps most significantly, the government now appears to be framing the issue as a matter of national security.

Authorities have expressed concern that large populations of undocumented migrants living in remote areas without adequate registration or oversight could create vulnerabilities for law enforcement and border management institutions.

While there is no indication that the majority of migrants are involved in criminal activities, security experts generally note that governments require accurate records of foreign residents to effectively monitor population movements, enforce immigration laws, and respond to potential security threats.

The administration's focus on documentation and registration reflects an effort to establish greater visibility over migrant populations while distinguishing between lawful residents and undocumented entrants.

Balancing Economic Needs and Sovereignty

The challenge facing the Boakai administration is likely to be finding a balance between Liberia's economic needs and its sovereign responsibility to regulate migration.

Many sectors of the economy, particularly artisanal mining and agriculture, rely heavily on migrant labor. At the same time, the government faces increasing pressure to ensure that immigration laws are enforced, natural resources are protected, and local communities benefit from economic activities occurring within their regions.

The administration's ongoing efforts to document Burkinabè nationals, determine their legal status, and strengthen monitoring of mining and agricultural operations suggest that a more comprehensive policy response may be forthcoming.

As Liberia continues to pursue economic growth and attract investment, the debate surrounding migration, land use, and resource governance is likely to remain a prominent issue on the national agenda.

For President Boakai, the challenge is no longer simply about managing migration flows—it is about ensuring that economic opportunity, national security, and the rule of law advance together.

Liberia Secures Commitment for Over 150 New Vessels at Posidonia 2026

ATHENS, Greece – Liberia has recorded a major milestone at Posidonia 2026, the world's largest and most influential international shipping exhibition, with commitments secured for more than 150 vessels to join the Liberian Registry, according to the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA).

The development follows a series of high-level engagements led by LiMA Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr., with global shipowners, vessel managers, maritime investors, classification societies, and key stakeholders in the international shipping industry during the ongoing exhibition in Athens, Greece.

According to LiMA, the anticipated addition of approximately 150 vessels represents a significant expansion of Liberia's flagship registry program and underscores growing international confidence in the country's maritime administration.

Beyond fleet growth, several international shipowners and maritime operators reportedly expressed strong interest in employing more Liberian seafarers aboard their vessels, a move expected to create new employment opportunities for qualified Liberian maritime professionals and support the government's broader job creation agenda.

Speaking from Athens, Commissioner Lighe described Liberia's participation at Posidonia 2026 as highly productive and reflective of the country's commitment to strengthening its position within the global maritime sector.

"Our engagements at Posidonia 2026 have been highly productive and affirm Liberia's reputation as a trusted and preferred maritime flag state," Lighe said. "The interest shown by international shipowners in registering additional vessels under the Liberian flag and employing more Liberian seafarers reflects the confidence that the global maritime community continues to place in Liberia."

He noted that the expected addition of over 150 vessels to the Liberian Registry will further enhance Liberia's standing among the world's leading maritime nations while generating additional revenues and economic opportunities for national development.

Liberia operates one of the largest ship registries in the world and continues to play a prominent role in international maritime commerce. Officials say the outcomes from Posidonia 2026 are expected to strengthen the country's competitiveness in the global shipping industry and expand opportunities for Liberian participation in the maritime workforce.

Posidonia 2026, which brings together thousands of maritime professionals and companies from around the world, is widely regarded as one of the most important gatherings in the global shipping calendar.

All 285 Yellow Machines Arrive in Liberia; Government Sets June 29 for Nationwide Deployment

MONROVIA, Liberia – The Government of Liberia has completed the importation of all 285 yellow machines designated for road construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance across the country, marking a major milestone in its infrastructure development agenda.

The announcement was made on Saturday by the Yellow Machines Management Committee during an interview with Liberia National Television (LNTV) at Camp Sandee Ware Military Barracks in Monrovia.

A senior member of the Special Presidential Project Coordinating Committee, which oversees the deployment and operation of the equipment, disclosed that distribution of the machines to counties nationwide will officially begin on June 29, 2026.

According to the committee, the initial phase of deployment will focus on Liberia’s southeastern region before expanding to other counties across the country. The equipment is expected to significantly strengthen local road maintenance efforts and improve access to underserved communities.

The yellow machines initiative is one of President Joseph N. Boakai’s flagship infrastructure programs and is aimed at enhancing road connectivity nationwide while reducing the government's reliance on rented and contracted heavy-duty road construction equipment.

Government officials say the program will empower counties with the machinery needed to undertake routine road maintenance and rehabilitation projects, contributing to improved transportation, economic activity, and service delivery throughout Liberia.

President Boakai Orders Urgent Assessment of Liberians in South Africa Amid Rising Xenophobic Attacks

MONROVIA, Liberia – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to immediately conduct a comprehensive consular assessment of Liberian nationals residing in South Africa following increasing reports of xenophobic violence and insecurity targeting African immigrants.

According to a statement issued by the Executive Mansion, the President instructed the Foreign Ministry to urgently evaluate the safety, welfare, and living conditions of Liberians across South Africa and submit its findings to the Cabinet for immediate consideration and action.

The directive comes amid growing concerns over reports of attacks, intimidation, and discrimination against foreign nationals in several South African communities, raising fears among immigrant populations across the country.

Government officials said the assessment will seek to determine the number of Liberians affected, identify communities facing heightened security risks, and recommend measures to ensure the protection and well-being of Liberian citizens.

President Boakai further instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to work closely with Liberia’s Embassy in Pretoria, local authorities, and Liberian community leaders in South Africa to gather real-time information on the evolving situation.

“The Government of Liberia remains committed to protecting the rights, safety, and dignity of Liberian citizens wherever they reside,” the Executive Mansion said.

The administration also indicated that it will engage South African authorities and collaborate with regional and continental bodies, including the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), to address the situation through diplomatic channels.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to present its assessment report to Cabinet in the coming days as the government continues to monitor developments and evaluate additional measures to support Liberians living in South Africa.
