Protest in Indonesia over Lawmakers' high Allowance
Away from Liberia -Thousands of people are protesting in Indonesia after it was revealed that lawmakers receive a monthly housing allowance worth up to 50 million rupiah (about 3,000–5,000 US dollars).
The news sparked anger because the allowance is nearly ten times higher than the minimum wage in Jakarta, while ordinary people are struggling with high food prices and job losses. Protesters say the benefit shows how leaders are living in comfort while citizens face hardship.
The situation in Indonesia draws comparisons to Liberia, one of the poorest countries in the world, where lawmakers reportedly earn between 8,000 to 10,000 US dollars each month, far above the income of average Liberians.
President Prabowo Subianto has announced the cancellation of the housing allowance and overseas trips for lawmakers, but protesters say more changes are needed to reduce inequality and hold politicians accountable.
