FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hon. Augustine B. Chiewolo Addresses Concerns on Harmful Cultural Practices Bill

As a proud representative of District #5, Lofa County, and a lawmaker of the ruling administration, I want to assure my constituents and the public that I remain committed to preserving our rich cultural heritage while ensuring the well-being and safety of all citizens.

Recently, the President of Liberia submitted an Act to Ban Harmful Cultural Practices to the National Legislature for enactment. As a representative of a district where some of these practices are deeply rooted in our tradition, I understand the sensitivities and concerns surrounding this bill.

I want to reassure my people that I will work tirelessly to ensure that their cultural values and traditions are respected and protected. However, I also recognize the need to modernize and reform certain practices that may be detrimental to our society.

As a lawmaker, I will engage in constructive dialogue with my colleagues and the Executive branch of government to find a balanced approach that preserves our cultural identity while protecting the rights and dignity of all citizens, particularly women and children.

I am committed to being a bridge between the legislative process and the concerns of my people. I will work to ensure that any legislation passed is in the best interest of our nation and our people.

Let me be clear: my commitment to our cultural heritage remains unwavering. I will continue to advocate for our traditions and values while ensuring that we progress as a society.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Hon. Augustine B. Chiewolo
Representative, District #5, Lofa County

Warmest congratulations to His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, President of the Republic of Liberia, on the remarkable diplomatic win for our country! The decision by the United States Department of State to extend the validity period for certain nonimmigrant visas from 12 months to 36 months is a testament to the strong and enduring partnership between Liberia and the United States.

As a lawmaker of the ruling administration and Representative of District #5, Lofa County, I strongly support this great achievement, which will significantly ease travel, promote business and investment opportunities, and deepen people-to-people ties between our two nations.

I extend my heartfelt appreciation to H.E. Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister of Foreign Affairs, for her tireless efforts in rebranding Liberia on the international stage and driving the President's Foreign Policy vision. Your dedication to expanding areas of mutual cooperation and benefits for Liberian citizens abroad is truly commendable.

This diplomatic win is a clear demonstration of the confidence in Liberia's progress and global engagement. I look forward to seeing the positive impact of this development on our citizens, businesses, and the nation as a whole.

Once again, congratulations to President Boakai on this achievement. We are proud to have a leader who prioritizes international relations and the welfare of Liberians.

Rep. Augustine B. Chiewolo.
Representative District-5 Lofa County.

I am pleased to announce that I have written to the plenary of the House of Representatives, requesting that the leadership of the Liberia Marketing Association (LMA) be invited to appear before the House to address concerns regarding the management and operation of markets under their supervision.

As the Representative of District #5, Lofa County, I have been inundated with complaints from marketers and members of the public about the poor sanitary conditions of various markets across the country, despite the LMA generating and collecting funds from market activities. Furthermore, the trend of marketers abandoning their designated market halls to conduct business on major streets, creating traffic congestion and posing safety and environmental hazards, is a pressing concern that needs to be addressed.

I believe it is essential for the LMA leadership to provide clarity on their responsibility in overseeing and generating funds for market operations, as well as the steps they are taking to address these issues. I am confident that this plenary session will foster transparency, accountability, and a collective effort towards improving the welfare of our market women and men, as well as ensuring proper management of public spaces.

To the people of Lofa County, I want to assure you that I will continue to seek your interest and work tirelessly to address the challenges affecting our community. We are committed to serving you with honesty and integrity, and I look forward to working with all stakeholders to resolve these issues in the best interest of all concerned.
