INCHR Urges Speedy Prosecution in 19-Million Drug Saga
Sinkor, Liberia: The Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR) is calling on the Justice Ministry to ensure speedy
prosecution of every individual formally charged in connection with the 19-million drug saga as Liberians deserve timely, transparent, and impartial justice into the matter.
The INCHR is also urging the public to refrain from prejudging the guilt of the accused or subjecting them to humiliation, degrading treatment, or public condemnation before the conclusion of judicial proceedings.
In a release, the commission commended the Joint Security and collaborating foreign partners for what it described as the meticulous, coordinated, and highly professional manner in which the investigation is being conducted.
It urged the Joint Security to intensify efforts to locate, arrest, and bring before the courts every suspect who has fled justice, noting that the fight against illicit drugs cannot be selective.
The INCHR release added that combating illicit drugs is not merely a law enforcement responsibility but also a fundamental human rights obligation.
At the same time, the Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR) has commended the Ministry of Health for submission of the “Health Equity Fund Bill’, urging President Joseph Boakai to endorse and submit the instrument to the national legislature for enactment.
The INCHR in a release emphasized that access to quality healthcare is a fundamental human right as enshrined in the Constitution and the international treaties Liberia has ratified.
It says the Health Equity Fund Bill is a concrete manifestation of the State's obligation to respect, protect, and fulfill the right to health for all Liberians and legal residents, particularly the most vulnerable.
The INCHR noted that because of the importance of the bill, it stands ready to work and support the timely passage as the instrument seeks to establish the country's first comprehensive national health insurance scheme, designed to significantly expand access to quality healthcare services and accelerate progress toward universal health coverage.
The commission emphasized that the Health Equity Fund Bill is a critical step toward fulfilling Liberia's domestic and international human rights obligations concerning the right to health.
