FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STAND Calls for Dismissal and Prosecution of Police IG Coleman and Officers Responsible for the Murder of Matthew Mulbah

Monrovia, Liberia – October 12, 2025 – The Solidarity and Trust for a New Day (STAND) condemns in the strongest terms the cold-blooded killing of Matthew Mulbah, a young Liberian suffering from mental illness, by officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP) in Congo Town. His family sought help, not a co**se, yet the police responded with lethal force—an act that exposes a shocking pattern of extrajudicial killings, police brutality, and abuse of authority. STAND demands the immediate dismissal and prosecution of Police IG Coleman and the officers responsible, insisting that justice, accountability, and respect for human rights be upheld without delay.

Background of the Tragic Incident

On Wednesday, October 8, 2025, officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP) responded to a family call requesting assistance for Matthew Mulbah, who was experiencing a mental health episode. Eyewitnesses report that the first police team arrived in the morning, broke open Matthew’s room door, and attempted to persuade him to go for treatment at a mental health facility along Duport Road. When he refused, the officers left peacefully.

Later that afternoon, a second group of officers returned with a man described as a ‘medical doctor’ intending to administer a sedative. During a struggle with an officer attempting to restrain him, Matthew reacted defensively, injuring the officer with a knife before retreating and locking himself inside.

Reinforcements were then called. Upon arrival, officers again forced entry into the house. Eyewitnesses and video evidence confirm that the officers discharged multiple rounds, striking Matthew as he sought refuge in a bathroom. He was later dragged outside, bleeding and crying for help. Before being taken away, a man claiming to be a ‘doctor’ injected him with a substance believed to be a sedative whilehe remained handcuffed, wounded, and bleeding profusely.

‎Matthew was transported to John F. Kennedy Medical Center, where he was reportedly abandoned in a corridor and denied medical attention after police labeled him an “armed robber” unworthy of help.

‎Contradictions in the Police Account

‎In a late-night podcast, Inspector General Gregory Coleman misrepresented the facts, describing the incident as “a stabbing incident involving police officers”.

Recently, Mr. Kangar raise a concern on the inclusion of boys at the ministry of Gender and children protection.
While, we have a office of adolescence girls unit at the ministry of Gender and children protection, it is to my knowledge that there is no office for adolescent boys at the ministry of Gender.
While the name of the ministry is Gender it's has been narrow down to only women and girls.
The questions here are
*Where is the safe space for boys?
*Why there's no adolescent boys unit office at the ministry of Gender?
*Why there's no adolescent boys advisory panel at the ministry of Gender?
These are questions we boys need to ask ourselves;
* Is the system in our favor?
Do the ministry of Gender value and has protection for us as boys?
Boys, it's time to stand up and demand the ministry of Gender to organize and form a channel were we boys can interact and share our experience.
*Let the ministry organized the adolescence boys advisory panel same as they did for the girls
* Let the ministry established a adolescence boys unit at the ministry same as they did for the girls.
This is our rights too💪💪💪💪

BISHOP KORTU BROWN URGES BOAKAI ADMINISTRATION TO ENFORCE R**E LAWS WITHOUT SELECTIVITY
35 min. ago

MONROVIA – Bishop Kortu Brown has called on the Unity Party-led administration of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to apply the law uniformly in r**e cases, warning that selective justice could undermine public confidence in the country’s legal system.

In a statement issued on Saturday, September 29, 2025, in Browerville, the former president of the Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) said no individual should be shielded from prosecution when accused of r**e or other serious crimes. He cautioned that dragging cases or handling them inconsistently sets a troubling precedent that weakens trust in the rule of law.

“If someone is allegedly accused of breaking the law, that person should face the law to clear themselves,” Bishop Brown stressed. “The law should be applied in a uniform way so that it will be easy in the future, instead of the government dragging its feet.”

Brown, who now serves as General Overseer of New Water in the Desert Apostolic Pentecostal Church International, also urged suspended Deputy Youth and Sports Minister for Youth Development, Bryant McGill, to present himself to investigators and clear his name. “Under our law, an accused is not guilty until proven as such,” he said. “I want to encourage suspended Deputy Minister Bryant McGill to take the bold step to face his accuser in court.”

President Boakai suspended McGill on September 17 following allegations that he r**ed a minor. The suspension came after mounting pressure from civil society and women’s rights groups, who argued that McGill’s earlier voluntary leave of absence was inadequate. “Suspension is the right step, but now justice must follow,” Bishop Brown said. “There is absolutely no one that’s above the law in this country. Shielding alleged rapists sets a bad precedent. If it were your daughter or relative, how would you feel?”

Women’s rights advocates have continued to demand McGill

LIBERIA: CDC CONDEMNS FIRE AT WEAH’S RESIDENCE, DEMANDS INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION

MONROVIA – The opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has strongly condemned the recent fire at the residence of its Political Leader and former President George Manneh Weah, describing the incident as a premeditated attack intended to threaten his safety and destabilize national peace.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, and signed by National Chairman Atty. Janga A. Kowo, the CDC highlighted past incidents where former President Weah faced hostility upon returning to Liberia. The statement recalled violent confrontations at Roberts International Airport (RIA) during Weah’s previous returns, where personnel of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) reportedly clashed with CDC supporters. Kowo said similar tensions occurred during Weah’s most recent entry, with armed police officers stationed at the airport and several partisans allegedly manhandled, handcuffed, or detained.

The CDC also accused the Unity Party (UP) of spreading disinformation, including circulating a fake AI-generated image purportedly showing Weah’s bedroom. The coalition described these acts as deceptive attempts to mislead the public and tarnish the former president’s image.

The press release assured Liberians that former President Weah is safe, well, and in good health. However, the CDC called for a forensic, international, and independent investigation into the fire, emphasizing the need for transparency, truth, and justice.

The statement concluded by reiterating the CDC’s commitment to protecting Liberia’s peace, unity, and democratic principles, while cautioning against reckless actions and urging all actors to respect human life and the rule of law.

Liberia: Judge Denies Defence Motion to Suppress Evidence in High-Profile Criminal Case

Monrovia-Criminal Court “A” Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie has denied a motion filed by defense lawyers seeking to suppress key evidence in the ongoing trial of several defendants accused of serious criminal offenses.

The defense had argued that the evidence should be excluded on grounds that it was obtained through acts of torture, citing a medical report from AMI Expidirinary Medical Healthcare Center as supporting documentation.

The controversy stems from defense argument that the co-defendants were tortured to provide key evidence to prosecution, which they contested, should not be considered during the hearing.

As a result, they requested an independent medical examination, which Judge Willie granted.

The recent medical report was submitted to the court, following a court-ordered independent medical examination of the defendants at the AMI Expidirinary Medical Healthcare Center.

According to the report, the medical team found physical and psychological indicators consistent with claims of torture, including bruising, signs of prolonged restraint, and elevated stress markers.

Defense attorneys argued that these findings substantiate their claim that statements and evidence obtained from the defendants during the initial stages of the investigation were secured under duress, in violation of both Liberian and international legal standards prohibiting torture and coercion.

Motion to Suppress Evidence Denied

Despite the report, in a ruling delivered earlier Wednesday, September 24, Judge Willie rejected the defence’s motion to suppress the evidence, stating that while the medical report raises serious concerns, it does not, on its own, meet the legal threshold required to exclude the evidence in question.

“Based on the issue and the law cited,” Judge Willie declared from the bench, “the motion to suppress evidence is hereby denied.” He further ordered that the trial will proceed this Friday as scheduled.

The defense has taken exception to the ruling and indicated its intention to pursue statutory remedies, potentially including an interlocutory appeal or a writ of prohibition to the Supreme Court of Liberia.

Questions Over NSA’s Role in the Investigation

Before the ruling, during arguments, the defense also challenged the legality of the National Security Agency’s (NSA) involvement in the investigation.

COURT IN RIVERCESS ORDERS RELEASE OF JOURNALIST AFTER UNJUST DETENTION

RIVERCESS COUNTY – The Cestos Magisterial Court in Rivercess County has overturned its earlier decision to jail journalist Eric Opa Doue, following widespread condemnation of the ruling as a misapplication of the law.

According to a press release issued Monday, September 15, 2025, and signed by Julius Kanubah, President of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), Magistrate Dixon Yeahgar controversially sentenced journalist Doue to 30 days in prison on a charge of criminal coercion. The PUL denounced the charge as baseless and argued that the law had been wrongly applied, calling for the journalist’s immediate release.

Although the reasons for the reversal remain unclear, the decision came just one day after the Union’s strong public condemnation and broad calls for justice.

Attorney-at-Law Bruce Boweh, who represented journalist Doue at the Union’s request, confirmed that the release was in accordance with the law and followed a series of interventions. The PUL commends all who contributed to this outcome.

Speaking by phone on September 12, 2025, shortly after regaining his freedom, journalist Doue expressed relief and gratitude. “I am happy to be free again,” he told the Union, thanking the PUL and all who intervened on his behalf.

The PUL also acknowledges that journalist Eric Doue and his colleague Methusaleh Gaye erred in their August 11, 2025 reporting, in which they wrongly alleged that Police Officer Ojuku Weeks had been arrested with narcotics and bribed the Yarpah Town Magisterial Court for his release.

Nevertheless, the Union maintains that charging the journalists with criminal coercion was unjustified, since no such crime had been committed.

Moving forward, the PUL has pledged to work with its legal counsel and stakeholders in Rivercess to strengthen relations between the media and local authorities, to foster mutual respect in the advancement of the public good.

Background and timeline:

August 13, 2025: Eric Opa Doue was arrested by court sheriffs at the direction of Associate Magistrate Debah Zuku Debah of the Yarpah Town Magisterial Court. Following his release on the same day, he was instructed to reappear on August 18, 2025, which he did but without a lawyer. He was subsequently informed by the Magistrate to re-appear with a legal counsel by August 20, 2025, or risks re-arrest.

Liberia: LDEA Makes Major Drug Bust Along 72nd Boulevard

Monrovia- As one of a major breakthrough in the fight against illicit drugs, Inspector Patrick Kormazu of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) has led a successful operation that resulted in the seizure of a large consignment of Tramadol and Kush from one of the most notorious and active ghettos located along 72nd Boulevard Road.

During the operation, LDEA officers arrested at least two suspected drug dealers and took several drug users into custody.

All individuals are currently being held by the LDEA as investigations continue.

The raid, which was conducted following intelligence gathering and surveillance, targeted what authorities have described as a “major distribution hub” for synthetic opioids and narcotics within the Montserrado area.

Inspector Kormazu, speaking briefly after the operation, stated that the LDEA remains committed to dismantling drug networks and protecting communities from the growing threat of substance abuse.

The LDEA will release a full statement with details of this operation, quantities of drugs seized, and charges pending against the suspects.

Court Finds Bill Jallah Guilty of Murder awaits probation reports for sentencing.

Monrovia, Liberia – September 11, 2025

In a landmark ruling, the Criminal Court B" has found Defendant Bill Jallah guilty on all counts of a brutal attack that led to the death of a young woman, identified during trial as his close friend. The charges include Murder.

The court delivered its final judgment after hearing testimonies from medical professionals, the prosecution, the defense, and the defendant himself. During the course of the trial, a medical witness detailed gruesome injuries on the victim’s body, including multiple stab wounds measuring up to six inches in depth, primarily around the head, shoulder, and arm. These wounds, according to the expert, led directly to her death.

The defendant, who took the stand in his own defense, told the court he was unable to recall the full events of the tragic night, claiming trauma and emotional breakdown. He admitted that the deceased was a close friend and said he has been struggling with guilt and disbelief. Expressing remorse, he apologized to the victim’s family and begged the court for mercy, asking for justice tempered with compassion.

Despite his emotional testimony, the Prosecution urged the court to reject any plea for leniency, arguing that the defendant’s actions were premeditated and deliberate, pointing out that the victim was stabbed seven times.

In its final judgment, the court stated:

“The defendant’s act of inflicting the multiple bodily injuries on the deceased, which led to her untimely death, was clearly premeditated. His own voluntary confession leaves no doubt that his actions violated civilized norms and the laws of the Republic of Liberia.”

The court emphasized that the evidence and legal arguments presented during the trial overwhelmingly supported a guilty verdict. The ruling highlighted the defendant’s own admission and remorse but clarified that such emotions do not absolve criminal accountability.

‎Judge’s final ruling reads:

‎ “WHEREFORE AND IN VIEW of the foregoing circumstance and facts, Defendant Bill Jallah is hereby adjudged guilty on all counts of the indictment: Murder, Attempted Murder, and Aggravated Assault.”

‎The court also ordered the Clerk to communicate with the Probation Services of the Ministry of Justice to conduct a background investigation on the convict.

SUP VOWS MASS PROTESTS, DEMANDS IMMEDIATE RESIGNATION OF UL PRESIDENT DR. LAYLI MAPARYAN

MONROVIA – The Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP) has issued an ultimatum to the University of Liberia administration, calling for mass protests beginning Monday, September 15, 2025, to demand the immediate resignation or dismissal of President Dr. Layli Maparyan.

In a statement released Thursday, September 11, SUP accused Dr. Maparyan of corruption, incompetence, and blatant disregard for student welfare. The party claims that despite urgent meetings with House Speaker Fonati Koffa and members of the House of Representatives, the UL administration has chosen to reopen the school without addressing the pressing concerns of more than 25,000 students. SUP described this decision as a “display of arrogance, pomposity, and a complete disregard for academic integrity.”

Under the leadership of Chairman Sylvester Wheeler, SUP outlined a list of grievances, including the reversal of the decision to treat vacation school as a full semester, immediate resolution of add-and-drop issues, timely grade uploads to the university portal, and provision of transportation to students commuting to Fendall campus. The group also demanded functional campus facilities, protection against unlawful employee dismissals, transparent hiring practices, strengthened campus security, and the reconstitution of the Board of Trustees.

Secretary-General Odecious Mulbah, speaking on behalf of the 33rd Politburo and Central Committee of SUP, warned that “dialogue without action is meaningless and useless” and urged students to mobilize on campuses nationwide to press their demands. The group vowed that protests would be “mass and unrelenting” until Dr. Maparyan steps down.

SUP’s call for action underscores rising tensions at Liberia’s premier higher education institution, where students have increasingly voiced frustrations over administrative inefficiency, poor campus infrastructure, and perceived mismanagement. The party framed its campaign as a fight for students’ rights and academic fairness, signaling a potential escalation of unrest if the administration does not respond.

At the time of publication, Dr. Maparyan and the University of Liberia administration had not issued a response to SUP’s demands. Observers now await developments as students prepare to take to the streets in what promises to be a decisive confrontation over the future of the university’s leadership.

Liberia: Turkish National Suspected of Ebola Dies; Over 20 Quarantined in Ganta as Army Enforces Compliance, But NPHIL Says No Ebola Detected

Ganta, Nimba County – Health authorities in Liberia have quarantined more than 20 people in Ganta, Nimba County following the death of a Turkish national initially suspected of having Ebola.

The response, which includes military deployment and strict enforcement of health protocols, has stirred public concern — even as the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) confirmed that no Ebola or Marburg virus was detected in laboratory tests.

According to the Nimba County Health Team, the Turkish national, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was a crew member who reportedly died suddenly at sea near Maryland County.

His body was being transported to Monrovia when health authorities in Ganta intercepted the vehicle carrying the remains and flagged the incident as a potential Ebola case. The suspected case immediately triggered emergency protocols, including the quarantine of more than 20 individuals.
Those quarantined include workers at Gompa Funeral Home, passengers in the taxi that transported the body, and the funeral home’s owner, David Mulbeh. Military officers from the Gbarnga Regional Hub were deployed in Ganta to enforce compliance and prevent any possible spread of infection. Specimens from the deceased were subsequently sent to Monrovia for laboratory analysis.

On Tuesday, September 10, the National Public Health Institute of Liberia announced that all specimens tested at its National Reference Laboratory returned negative for Ebola and Marburg viruses.

“To date (10th September 2025 at 21:00 Hrs GMT), all specimens received and tested by the molecular PCR method at the National Reference Laboratory of the NPHIL have demonstrated ‘NEGATIVE’ for Ebola and Marburg. This NEGATIVE-TEST RESULT thereby rules out any of the indicated VHF infections in said biological specimens,” said NPHIL Director General, Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan.

While the test results have ruled out any case of Viral Hemorrhagic Fever (VHF), NPHIL fell short of stating whether the ongoing quarantine in Ganta would be lifted — a silence that has drawn criticism and highlighted apparent coordination gaps between NPHIL and the Ministry of Health.

RRNN CONDEMNS IMPRISONMENT OF JOURNALIST ERIC OPA DOUE

LIBERIA – Rural Reporters News Network (RRNN) is appalled by the targeted imprisonment of one of its network members, journalist Eric Opa Doue to 30 days in prison, and called for his immediate release. The jailing of journalist Eric by the Cestos City Magisterial Court in Rivercess County is nothing, but a deliberate act to even score with him for his history of critical reporting in the county.

According to a press release issued on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, and signed by Paul M. Kanneh, Team Leader of RRNN, journalist Eric was jailed on Monday, September 8, 2025, on the orders of Magistrate Dixon Yeahgar, in what RRNN described as an attempt to harass, intimidate, and silence him.

RRNN is aware of earlier understanding between the parties to settle the matter in chambers with the consent of the County Attorney of Rivercess, Martin Tumow and police officer Ojuku Weeks. Unfortunately, judicial authorities under the gavel of Magistrate Yeahgbar ignored the previous settlement which all parties agreed to and went ahead to jail the journalist.

The rural journalists’ network of over 27 members is extremely troubled by the actions of Magistrate Yeahgar, the County Attorney, Martin Tumoe, and police officer Ojuku Weeks against Journalist Eric.

We think that Magistrate Yeahgar, acting under pretense, has misused/misapplied his judicial power by erroneously detaining one of our network members who does not deserve such harsh punishment.

The network strongly condemns this abuse of judicial power and called for the immediate release of their members within 24 hours.

On August 13, 2025, Journalist Eric Opa Doue was arrested by court sheriffs at the direction of Associate Magistrate Debah Zuku Debah of the Yarpah Town Magisterial Court. Following his release on the same day, he was instructed to reappear on August 18, 2025, which he did but without a lawyer. He was subsequently informed by the Magistrate to re-appear with a legal counsel by August 20, 2025, or risks re-arrest.

On August 15, 2025, Journalist Eric was taken to prison at the Cestos Prison due to his inability to secure a cash bond. He was released based on personal recognizance, after spending a night in jail.

Following his release, the Yarpah Town Magisterial Court dropped the “criminal contempt of court” charge against him on August 20, 2025 after concerted efforts by the Press Union.
