LRRRC Executive Director Presents Report to President Boakai on the Influx of Burkinabè in Liberia

June 4, 2026

Executive Mansion, Monrovia: The Executive Director of the Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC), Cllr. Jeror Cole Bangalu, along with development partners, on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, presented a joint mission report to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., warning of a rapid surge of Burkinabè migrants into Southeastern Liberia.

Cllr. Bangalu informed the President that approximately 140,000 Burkinabè nationals are currently residing in Grand Gedeh and River Gee Counties, with the majority engaged in mining and agricultural activities. He described the influx as an alarming national concern that is placing increasing pressure on local resources and posing significant security and humanitarian challenges.

“Without a coordinated response, this situation could overwhelm communities already facing limited infrastructure and services,” Cllr. Bangalu said.

President Boakai received the report and directed that it be elevated to the Cabinet for broader national security and policy deliberations.

Cllr. Bangalu noted that implementing the report’s recommendations will require close collaboration between the Government of Liberia and international partners. He disclosed that a stakeholders’ meeting with donor partners is expected to be convened to review the findings and explore support mechanisms for effective implementation.

He emphasized that while some recommendations require immediate attention, a strategic and coordinated approach supported through national budgetary allocations and international partnerships remains critical to preventing further strain on host communities.

The LRRRC Executive Director acknowledged that the report was the result of a joint field assessment mission conducted by the LRRRC in collaboration with the French Embassy, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Human Rights Office, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the Liberia Immigration Service.

The presentation meeting was attended by French Ambassador Isabelle Le Guellec, Liberia Immigration Service Commissioner General Elijah F. Rufus, UNFPA Country Representative Dr. Mady Biaye, Head of the United Nations Human Rights Office Christian Mukosa, and Acting Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration, Lenaud Serge Desire.

Cllr. Bangalu expressed appreciation for their collaboration throughout the assessment process and voiced confidence that, with sustained support from national and international partners, the report’s recommendations would be progressively implemented to help stabilize the situation and strengthen support for affected communities.

Liberia’s health authorities have placed sixteen foreign nationals under active surveillance after they arrived from East African countries currently associated with Eb0la concerns, including Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The move is part of a nationwide preventive strategy aimed at detecting and containing any possible re-emergence of the virüs before it spreads.

The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) says the individuals are being screened and closely monitored under enhanced health surveillance measures. Officials emphasized that there are currently no confirmed Eb0la cases in Liberia, but the country is taking precautionary steps due to the history of Eb0la outbreaks in parts of Africa.

The announcement reflects Liberia’s heightened preparedness following past experiences with the de@dly virüs during the 2014–2016 West African Eb0la outbreak. Health authorities are urging the public to remain calm, cooperate with health screening efforts, and continue observing basic hygiene and public health measures.

NPHIL says it remains on alert and is working with international and regional health partners to ensure rapid response capabilities should any suspected case emerge.

President Boakai Unveils Liberia’s First Digital Village in Foya, Expanding Rural Connectivity

May 26, 2026

FOYA, LOFA COUNTY – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., on Saturday, unveiled the Liberia Digital Village Program in Foya City, marking a decisive step toward bridging the country’s digital divide and advancing inclusive development under the ARREST Agenda.

Themed “Connecting for a Brighter Future,” the initiative brings internet access, solar-powered electricity, and smart education systems to underserved communities in Foya District. It is delivered through a partnership between the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, the Liberia Telecommunications Authority, and Huawei Technologies.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Boakai said technology must reach every Liberian, not only those in urban centers. He described the program as a practical investment opportunity that would unlock progress in education, healthcare, agriculture, and small business across rural Liberia.

The Foya Digital Village is anchored by a solar mini-grid powering 50 households, a school, and a community clinic. Combined with expanded mobile and internet connectivity, the project is expected to benefit more than 50,000 residents while creating jobs during implementation and operation.

President Boakai commended Minister Sekou Kromah, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, and the Liberia Telecommunications Authority for driving the nation’s digital transformation agenda.

He also expressed gratitude to the People’s Republic of China for its longstanding partnership and continued support to Liberia’s national development priorities, while reaffirming Liberia’s adherence to the One-China Policy.

Huawei representatives described the model as a replicable approach to rural development, integrating renewable energy, connectivity, and digital learning to raise living standards. Educational and sports materials were donated to nearby schools as part of the community outreach.

During the ceremony, former Liberia Telecommunications Authority Chairman Abdullah L. Kamara, Huawei executives, and Chinese Ambassador Yin Chengwu were recognized for their contributions to the project.

The Government plans to expand the Digital Village Program to additional counties, aiming to accelerate digital transformation and ensure that technology-driven opportunities reach communities across the country.
