DHO Launches Safe Motherhood Week Campaign at St. Tomathy Hospital
St. Tomathy, July 7, 2025 — The District Health Officer (DHO), Probacruous D. Harris, officially launched Safe Motherhood Week on Monday at a key stakeholders’ meeting held in the conference hall of St. Tomathy Hospital. The campaign aims to promote safer childbirth practices and improve maternal and child health outcomes across the district.
Promoting Facility-Based Childbirth for Safer Deliveries
Speaking at the launch, Mr. Harris stressed the importance of discouraging home deliveries and encouraging pregnant women to give birth in health facilities. “Giving birth in a health facility significantly reduces risks for both mother and baby,” he said, urging expectant mothers to prioritize professional medical care.
Focus on Maternal and Child Health
The DHO highlighted the critical need for regular prenatal and postnatal care. He encouraged all pregnant women to attend scheduled check-ups at local health centers to ensure healthy pregnancies and safe deliveries.
Free Vaccination and Ultrasound Services Available
As part of the campaign, mothers are invited to bring their babies to Fatia Town Clinic for free vaccinations. Parents of girls aged 9 to 14 are also encouraged to bring their daughters for free cervical cancer (HPV) vaccinations, a vital preventive health measure.
Additionally, free ultrasound services will be offered at Fatia Clinic on July 8 and 9, providing essential prenatal screening to monitor the health of both mother and fetus.
Men Urged to Support Maternal Health
District Reproductive Health Officer Kebeh Momolu made a special appeal to men, urging them to actively support their pregnant partners throughout the pregnancy journey. “Family support plays a crucial role in ensuring safe motherhood,” Momolu emphasized.
A Step Forward for Community Health
Safe Motherhood Week is a vital campaign designed to raise awareness about maternal health challenges and reduce childbirth-related risks. By fostering community engagement and improving access to quality healthcare, the initiative aims to save lives and strengthen families throughout the district.
For more information on Safe Motherhood Week activities, residents are encouraged to contact their local health centers or visit St. Tomathy Hospital.
