Grand Bassa [Sept. 27,2025] โ A woman believed to be between ages 18- 20-years, Ruth Nimely, has been taken into police custody after allegedly stealing over two million Liberian dollars (L$2,076,000) from a local community of fishmonger in Buchanan.
Nimely, a resident of Big Fanti Town, reportedly confessed to the theft. According to sources close to the victims, she admitted to spending the stolen funds on personal items, including a bed worth L$110,000, two iPhones, and financial support for her boyfriend.
The victims are members of the Fish for Living Organization, a women-led community savings group made up primarily of fishmongers from the Big Fanti Town area. The group expressed deep distress over the loss, stating that some members had been contributing to the savings pool for over four years.
The alleged theft comes just weeks before the groupโs scheduled annual savings distribution in September, amplifying the impact on members who rely on the payout for critical household and business expenses.
The affected women are calling on the Liberia National Police for swift action and are appealing to the national government to help recover the funds and ensure justice is served.
Police investigations are ongoing.
