The Political situation in Guinea 🇬🇳 is not conducive for election:

Guinea has been under military rule since a coup in September 2021. The military junta has missed agreed-upon deadlines for returning to civilian rule and has shown little commitment to a transparent and timely transition to democracy.

1.Repression of Opposition and Civil Society:

The transitional government has taken several actions to consolidate power and restrict political space, including suspending major political parties, banning protests and demonstrations, and cracking down on independent media and dissenting voices. Reports mention arbitrary arrests and detentions of political opponents.

2.Constitutional Changes and Lack of Consensus:

A new constitution was recently passed in a controversial referendum, which allows the current transitional leader, General Mamady Doumbouya, to run for president despite an earlier transitional charter that would have barred him. Critics argue this process was unilateral and designed to legitimize continued military leadership, rather than being an inclusive process involving all political forces.

3.Electoral Process Concerns:

There are significant concerns about the impartiality and independence of the bodies responsible for organizing elections. Opposition groups have called for an independent and consensual electoral management body, which is not currently in place. The high fees for presidential candidates have also been criticized as a barrier to wider participation.

4.Lack of Essential Infrastructure:

Critical electoral infrastructure, such as an up-to-date and consensual voter register and the establishment of independent electoral bodies, is reportedly not yet adequately in place.
Elections are currently scheduled for December 2025. However, the existing environment of restricted freedoms and lack of political consensus means that, as of now, the conditions for genuinely democratic elections are widely seen as unmet.

The House of Representatives (Liberia) has voted to increase the total number of seats to 87, adding 14 new districts pending concurrence from the Senate.

The proposed distribution of the additional seats by county is as follows:

B**g County: 2 seats

Grand Bassa County: 1 seat

Grand Cape Mount County: 1 seat

Grand Gedeh County: 1 seat

Lofa County: 2 seats

Margibi County: 1 seat

Montserrado County: 4 seats

Nimba County: 2 seats

Total additional seats: 14
