By staff Reporter

MONROVIA, Liberia – River Gee County Superintendent Hon. Mike T. Swengbe is participating in a three-day National Health Review Conference in Monrovia focused on advancing Universal Health Insurance and improving maternal and newborn healthcare services across Liberia.

The conference, organized by the Ministry of Health under the theme, "Introducing Universal Health Insurance in Liberia: Financing Quality Maternal and Newborn Care for All," has brought together county superintendents, health officials, lawmakers, development partners, and healthcare professionals to discuss sustainable healthcare financing and strategies for achieving Universal Health Coverage.

Superintendent Swengbe described the proposed health insurance program as a major step toward expanding access to quality healthcare, especially for mothers, newborns, and vulnerable families in rural communities.

Leading the River Gee delegation alongside County Health Officer Dr. Pauline Weah, Swengbe is expected to highlight the county's progress in maternal healthcare and immunization while outlining challenges, including inadequate staffing, poor road access, and limited medical supplies.

The River Gee County Administration reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the Ministry of Health and development partners to strengthen the healthcare system and ensure quality healthcare services for every Liberian.

"Leadership Built on Merit Delivers Results" — Charles Kelleh Hails EPA Boss Dr. Emmanuel Urey Yarkpawolo's Transformational Leadership

By James D. Arku Jr.

MONROVIA, Liberia – Charles Nuwoe Kelleh, Chief of Office Staff to B**g County Senator Prince Kermue Moye Sr., has praised Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Executive Director Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo for what he described as the remarkable transformation of the institution under his leadership.

In an opinion commentary, Kelleh commended Dr. Yarkpawolo for restoring professionalism, accountability, and efficiency at the EPA, citing achievements such as expanding county offices, strengthening environmental law enforcement, conducting over 1,400 inspections, investigating nearly 200 environmental complaints, and generating more than US$1 million in government revenue through fines.

He also highlighted the adoption of new environmental regulations, the acquisition of a permanent EPA headquarters, and Liberia's increased participation in international climate initiatives under Dr. Yarkpawolo's leadership.

Kelleh argued that Liberia's progress depends on appointing qualified and competent professionals to public office rather than making appointments based on political loyalty or personal connections.

He concluded by urging national leaders to embrace merit-based leadership, saying strong institutions and sustainable national development can only be achieved by placing the right people in the right positions.

ANC Political Leader Alex Cummings Says Liberia Would Not Be Facing Current Drug Crisis Under His Leadership

MONROVIA, Liberia – Alternative National Congress (ANC) Political Leader Alex Cummings has asserted that Liberia's worsening drug crisis would not have reached its current level if he had been elected President.

Speaking on the Closing Argument talk show, Cummings said strong and decisive leadership is essential to addressing the country's growing substance abuse problem.

"If I were President of Liberia, Liberia would not have had this drug situation now," Cummings declared.

The former presidential candidate also revisited the outcome of the previous presidential election, questioning the credibility of the reported results.

"I've always said this, that the quote-unquote 1% result is nonsense. I had the opportunity to challenge it, but I didn't want to," he stated.

Reflecting on Liberia's political journey, Cummings stressed the importance of focusing on the future rather than dwelling on past events.

"You can learn from the past, but you can't change the past," he added.

His comments come amid growing national concern over the increasing prevalence of illicit drugs, particularly among young people, and have reignited discussions on governance, accountability, and the effectiveness of the country's response to the drug crisis.

Cummings' remarks are expected to generate political debate as Liberians continue to assess leadership alternatives ahead of future national elections.

NTA Celebrates One Year of Southeastern Transport Service, Plans Expansion.

MONROVIA - The National Transit Authority (NTA) has celebrated one year of uninterrupted public transport service to Liberia's southeastern counties, marking what it describes as a major step toward providing safe, reliable, and affordable transportation for commuters.

Speaking during the anniversary program at the NTA headquarters in Monrovia, Managing Director Edmund Forh thanked passengers for their continued trust and support, describing them as key partners in the authority's success.

Mr. Forh said the celebration marks one year since the NTA launched its southeastern transport route, adding that the confidence shown by passengers has motivated the authority to continue improving public transportation services across Liberia.

He encouraged commuters to report complaints or inappropriate conduct by NTA staff through the authority's official hotlines to help improve service delivery.

The NTA Managing Director also announced plans to extend bus services to Sinoe, Grand Kru, and River Cess counties once road conditions are suitable for regular operations.

MRD Youth Gives Senator Kogar 24-Hour Ultimatum Over 2029 Political Remarks.

MONROVIA - Youth Chairman of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction, MRD, Czar Paley, has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Nimba County Senator Samuel G. Kogar, demanding that he withdraw recent comments about his political future and return a symbolic red hat presented to him by the party's youth wing.

The demand follows remarks made by Senator Kogar on a local radio talk show on Monday, where he stated that he is open to serving as a vice-presidential running mate for any opposition presidential candidate in the 2029 presidential election.
Responding to the comments, Paley said the senator's position has disappointed many young members of the MRD, who viewed him as a key figure committed to advancing the party's political agenda.

According to the MRD Youth Chairman, Senator Kogar's remarks undermine the party's vision and weaken the confidence of supporters who have stood by him over the years.
Paley said the youth wing is demanding that Senator Kogar publicly retract his statement within 24 hours and return the symbolic red hat presented to him during the MRD Youth Congress in Ganta.

He described the hat as a symbol of the trust, loyalty, and confidence that the party's youth invested in the senator, adding that his willingness to align with any opposition political party as a potential running mate has betrayed the expectations and sacrifices of many MRD supporters.

The MRD youth leadership maintains that the senator's response to the ultimatum will determine its next course of action.

JEP Upgrades Power Infrastructure in Nimba and B**g to Meet International Standards and Improve Reliability

GANTA, Nimba County – Jungle Energy Power (JEP) has launched an extensive power infrastructure upgrade across Nimba and B**g Counties, introducing modern equipment and advanced protection systems aimed at significantly improving electricity reliability, reducing outages, and bringing the regional power network in line with international standards.

The ambitious initiative comes as part of JEP's ongoing commitment to addressing persistent power interruptions while enhancing the safety and efficiency of electricity distribution for thousands of customers.

Speaking in an interview, JEP Public Relations Officer Zarwolo Bamakpeh disclosed that the company has deployed specialized engineering teams to modernize the electricity grid in several urban and rural communities throughout both counties.

According to Bamakpeh, the ongoing rehabilitation includes replacing aging wooden poles and galvanized pipes with durable concrete poles, eliminating low-hanging power lines, and correcting unsafe electrical connections that have posed risks to residents for years.

"We have deployed our teams to identify problem areas, streamline the network, and properly document all connections," Bamakpeh said. "Wooden poles and galvanized pipes are being replaced with concrete poles, while low-hanging wires are being elevated to safe heights, particularly at road crossings, to eliminate potential hazards."

As part of the modernization effort, JEP has also installed new transformers, advanced automatic reclosers, and other state-of-the-art protective equipment in several communities, including Karnplay, Bahn, Saclepea, Ganta, Palala, Banga, and SKT.

The company explained that these technologies are designed to isolate electrical faults within specific locations instead of allowing them to disrupt the entire regional power grid. Previously, faults or short circuits in communities such as Saclepea or Tappita could trigger widespread outages across Nimba and B**g Counties.

Bamakpeh noted that JEP had suffered significant equipment losses in the past due to severe weather and electrical faults. However, the newly installed protection systems—including an emergency auto-shutdown device commissioned in mid-June—are capable of immediately disconnecting power during emergencies such as fires or severe line sparking, greatly reducing damage and enhancing public safety.

"These protective devices are intended to stabilize the grid and protect our customers," he explained. "We have lost substantial equipment in previous years due to challenges we had not fully mitigated. Today, we can confidently say that our grid has reached a level of stability consistent with international standards."

Responding to public concerns about routine maintenance outages, Bamakpeh explained that JEP receives electricity from the TRANSCO CLSG Yekepa Substation near Second Town. In the past, maintenance activities required shutting down electricity across both counties simultaneously for as long as nine hours.

To improve service delivery, the company has introduced a segmented maintenance strategy that allows engineers to work on one section of the network while electricity remains available in the other. Under the new system, maintenance can be carried out in B**g County while Nimba remains energized, and vice versa, significantly reducing outage durations.

Bamakpeh also highlighted the unique challenges posed by the rainy season, noting that lightning, thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and overgrown vegetation frequently affect rural transmission lines more severely than urban networks.

To address these issues, JEP has intensified vegetation management by deploying specialized equipment to clear trees and bushes encroaching on high-voltage lines. In areas such as Louh, where fallen trees have repeatedly caused prolonged outages, the company is working closely with local authorities and community leaders to facilitate the safe clearing of right-of-way corridors.

He further appealed to residents across Nimba and B**g Counties to support the company's efforts by promptly reporting fallen trees, damaged power lines, faulty installations, and illegal electrical connections.

"We cannot be everywhere at once," Bamakpeh emphasized. "The network is extensive, and the investment is enormous. We rely on citizens to provide timely information so we can respond quickly and continue delivering safe, reliable, and quality electricity services."

The ongoing infrastructure expansion represents one of JEP's most significant investments in regional power development and is expected to strengthen electricity reliability, improve public safety, and support economic growth across Nimba and B**g Counties.

🚨 2029 ELECTIONS: Joseph Jimmy Sankaituah Rejects 'Voter Trucking,' Calls Practice Criminal

By James D. Arku Jr.

KAKATA, Margibi County – Former Margibi County District #4 representative candidate Hon. Joseph Jimmy Sankaituah has publicly declared that he will not engage in the practice of transporting voters, commonly referred to as "trucking," ahead of the 2029 general elections.

Speaking during an interview, Sankaituah described voter trucking as a criminal act that undermines the integrity of the electoral process and weakens accountability between elected officials and the communities they represent.

According to him, politicians who rely on trucking voters may succeed in winning elections but often struggle to meet the expectations of the people they claim to represent during their six-year term in office.

"No, I think trucking is criminal, and I don't want to face the legitimacy crisis that others are facing. You may truck people and get elected, but after the election, you have six years to manage the people and their expectations. I don't want to be involved in anything that I know is not right for me today or tomorrow," Sankaituah said.

Sankaituah further alleged that the practice of trucking voters has contributed to dissatisfaction among residents of Margibi County District #4, claiming it has affected the relationship between constituents and their elected representative, Rep. Emmanuel Yarh.

His comments come as political discussions surrounding the 2029 elections continue to gain momentum, with issues of electoral integrity and voter accountability expected to feature prominently in public debate.

Rubber Brokers Urge President to Repeal Executive Order 166, Warn Current Policy Is Crippling Farmers' Livelihoods

By John Sackie ZayZay
August 3, 2026

MONROVIA, Liberia – A leading Liberian rubber broker has called on the Government of Liberia to immediately repeal Executive Order 166, arguing that the policy is severely affecting thousands of local rubber farmers and brokers by limiting competition and delaying access to much-needed income.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, Charles Bamakpeh, Chief Executive Officer of New Liberia Incorporated Rubber Broker and a member of the National Rubber Farmers and Brokers Union, described the current restrictions as a major setback for local businesses that depend on the rubber trade.

According to Bamakpeh, the sector functioned more effectively before the implementation of the Executive Order, allowing farmers and brokers to freely market their rubber and receive prompt payments. He alleged that the current arrangement primarily benefits large concession companies while leaving Liberian farmers and brokers at a disadvantage.

> "When the market was open, farmers and brokers were able to sell freely and receive their money immediately. Today, many are struggling because of restrictions that have reduced competition," he said.

Delayed Payments Deepening Hardship

Bamakpeh explained that under the current system, many farmers are required to sell their rubber to concession companies, where payment is often delayed for weeks or even months.

He said the delays have left many families unable to meet urgent financial obligations, including paying hospital bills, funding emergency medical treatment, covering children's school fees, and meeting daily household expenses.

Recalling his own experience, Bamakpeh said he delivered 105 tons of rubber in 2021 but waited approximately seven months before receiving payment after the product was redirected through an intermediary buyer.

He described such delays as unsustainable for farmers who rely on immediate income from rubber sales to support their families.

Calls for Fair Competition

Bamakpeh also questioned what he described as unequal treatment within the rubber industry. He argued that while concession companies are permitted to export processed rubber products such as Technically Specified Rubber (TSR 10 and TSR 20), local brokers remain restricted from exporting similar raw materials.

He maintained that if concessionaires were manufacturing finished products such as vehicle tires, rain boots, or other rubber goods within Liberia, the policy could be justified. However, he contended that exporting semi-processed rubber while restricting local traders creates an uneven playing field.

Appeal to President Boakai

On behalf of the National Rubber Farmers and Brokers Union, Bamakpeh appealed to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to engage directly with local rubber farmers and brokers to better understand the challenges confronting the sector.

He urged the government to consider repealing Executive Order 166, reopen the rubber market to encourage fair competition, and provide local brokers with opportunities to export independently while building the capacity to establish local rubber processing facilities.

According to him, such measures would strengthen the domestic rubber industry, improve farmers' incomes, and contribute to broader economic growth.

The Government of Liberia has not publicly responded to Bamakpeh's comments at the time of publication.

In a major boost to community journalism and media development, Maryland County District #1 Representative Hon. P. Mike Jurry has donated a modern news reporting bus equipped with a Starlink satellite internet system to Radio Cape Palmas, significantly enhancing the station's capacity for field reporting and real-time news coverage.

The donation, presented on Sunday, is expected to strengthen the station's ability to gather and transmit timely, accurate, and credible news from remote communities across Maryland County and neighboring areas.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony, Representative Jurry said the donation reflects his commitment to empowering the media and ensuring journalists have the necessary tools to effectively serve the public. He noted that providing a dedicated vehicle and reliable internet connectivity will reduce the station's dependence on commercial transportation while improving the speed and efficiency of news reporting.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the station, Radio Cape Palmas Station Manager Johnson Massaquoi expressed profound appreciation to the lawmaker for what he described as a landmark contribution to the institution.

Massaquoi said the modern bus and Starlink internet system will greatly enhance the station's operational capacity, enabling reporters to cover events more efficiently, particularly in hard-to-reach communities, while maintaining high standards of factual and credible journalism.

Staff members of Radio Cape Palmas also assured Representative Jurry that the donated equipment will be responsibly managed and used exclusively for its intended purpose of improving news gathering, community engagement, and public service broadcasting.

The donation has been widely welcomed as a significant investment in the growth of independent journalism and access to information in Maryland County, where reliable transportation and internet connectivity have long posed challenges for media practitioners.
