Senator Momo Tarnuekollie Cyrus Distances Himself from Recent LCU Board Resolution; Calls for Integrity and Transparency in Ongoing LACC Case

Monrovia, Liberia — Senator Momo Tarnuekollie Cyrus, Member of the Board of Trustees of the Lofa County University (LCU), has clarified his position regarding the recent Board Resolution surrounding the indictment of several university officials by the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC).

At a duly convened Board meeting of the Lofa County University, attended by a quorum of members, the Board resolved that officials of the University recently indicted by the LACC on allegations of corruption and other malpractices be recused from active duties pending the outcome of their ongoing legal matter before the 10th Judicial Circuit Court in Voinjama. This decision was made to safeguard the integrity of the institution and ensure that due process is observed without hindrance.

Senator Cyrus expressed deep concern that the resolution recently published by the University does not accurately reflect the deliberations or the decision reached by the Board. Notably, the published resolution contains no clause or provision requiring the recusal of the indicted officials—an omission the Senator described as “both troubling and inconsistent with the Board’s established commitment to accountability.”

“While I firmly uphold the principle that every accused person is innocent until proven guilty, it is equally imperative to adhere to sound administrative standards,” Senator Cyrus stated. “Officials facing serious allegations should step aside temporarily to allow for an independent and transparent process. This is critical for preserving public confidence in LCU and the credibility of our higher education institutions.”

Senator Cyrus reaffirmed his commitment to the values of transparency, accountability, and good governance. He called on the LCU administration to immediately correct the published resolution to reflect the Board’s true decision and urged all stakeholders to ensure that the University remains above reproach during this sensitive period.

In generous appreciations to teachers, the Voinjama District Teachers' Association, led by Chairman Mr. Gayflor Zayzay, is poised to honor the invaluable contributions of educators in shaping the future.

World Teachers' Day was proclaimed by UNESCO on October 5, 1994, to recognize the essential role that teachers play in empowering individuals and communities. This year, Mr. Zayzay emphasizes the importance of unity among educators, urging all teachers—whether from private or government institutions—to come together and celebrate their shared mission.

"We join our fellow educators across Liberia and beyond to commemorate this day," Mr. Zayzay states passionately. "It is a time to reflect on our commitment to nurturing and inspiring the next generation. Our role extends beyond teaching; we are mentors, guides, and leaders who shape the minds and hearts of our students."

The celebration will not only honor teachers but also invite educational enthusiasts, parents, students, and stakeholders to participate in the festivities. Various activities are planned, including indoor and outdoor.

Mr. Zayxay calls upon everyone to join the celebration, highlighting the importance of collaboration in education. "We need the support of parents and the community to create an environment where learning thrives," he explains. "Together, we can inspire our students to reach their full potential and become responsible citizens of tomorrow."

In a world that is rapidly changing, the theme "Inspiring the Next Generation of Learners" resonates deeply. It serves as a reminder that education is not just about imparting knowledge, but also about fostering creativity, critical thinking, and resilience in students.

As the community comes together to celebrate World Teachers' Day, it is a moment to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of teachers who inspire generations. Mr. Zayxay's call to action is clear: "Let us all commit to supporting our teachers and empowering our students. Together, we can build a brighter future for Voinjama District and beyond.

Lofa County, Liberia – In a significant step toward improving public health and sanitation in Lofa County, the Community Safety Initiatives (CSI) has announced a large-scale engagement campaign for the sale of SATO (Sanitation for All) products, beginning Monday, June 16, 2025. The initiative aims to make Lofa an open defecation-free community, aligning with national and international health standards.

According to the Executive Director Mr. Samukai B. Sannoh unveiled the project at a press briefing held at CSI’s Lofa headquarters, emphasizing that the initiative is crucial in addressing the public health crisis stemming from poor sanitation practices. “We are committed to ensuring that every household in Lofa County has access to proper sanitation facilities. With the implementation of SATO products, we are taking a decisive step toward eradicating open defecation in our communities,” Mr. Sannoh stated.

The launch of this campaign comes with vital support from Population Services International (PSI) with supports for USAID, organizations that share CSI’s vision for a healthier Liberia. The partnership has facilitated the procurement of essential commodities, allowing CSI to provide affordable sanitation solutions to the local populace.

There are two types of SATO products being offered: the SATO Stool, priced at $15, and the SATO Pan, sold for $10. These innovative toilets are designed to be hygienic, durable, and cost-effective, making them accessible to families across varying income levels. The SATO designs are user-friendly and tailor-made for areas struggling with inadequate sanitation facilities.

Residents of Lofa County are encouraged to participate actively in this initiative, as it not only benefits individual households but also contributes to the overall well-being of the community. To promote awareness and facilitate education about the importance of sanitation, CSI has planned a series of community workshops and information sessions throughout the county.

“The community’s involvement is vital,” remarked Mr. Sannoh. “We aim to engage local leaders, schools, and health workers, creating a ripple effect of knowledge and action. Together, we can achieve the goal of an open defecation-free environment.”

As the campaign kicks off on June 16, CSI has mobilized local volunteers and trained ambassadors to advocate for proper sanitation practices and to help distribute the SATO products. Community members who wish to purchase the products or learn more about their benefits can visit designated locations in their neighborhoods or participate in the scheduled workshops.

This initiative not only aligns with global health goals but also fosters a sense of community ownership and responsibility towards public health. As Lofa County pioneers this program in Liberia, the hope is to serve as a model for other regions with similar sanitation challenges.

Through the collective efforts of CSI, PSI, USAID, and the citizens of Lofa County, this initiative marks a promising stride toward a healthier, more sustainable future, free from the perils of open defecation.

The House of Representatives is reviewing a bill seeking to establish a new national holiday titled "All Liberia Presidents' Day" to honor the collective leadership and legacy of all former Presidents of the Republic of Liberia.

The proposed legislation, submitted by Montserrado County Electoral District #16 Representative Hon. Dixon W. Seboe, is titled "An Act to Create All Liberia Presidents' Day." The bill was presented during the House's regular session Thursday, June 5, 2025 for consideration and further legislative action.

In his submission, Hon. Seboe emphasized that Liberia has had 25 presidents, each of whom served during unique historical periods and made various contributions to the nation's development. Despite this, only two former presidents — Joseph Jenkins Roberts (March 15) and William V.S. Tubman (November 29) — are officially honored with national holidays recognizing their birthdays.

“Considering the fact that each president has done something worth commendation, this act seeks to grant a single day to celebrate all our Presidents as a National Holiday — to reflect on their leadership, challenges, and achievements in shaping Liberia’s past and present.” Hon. Seboe asserts.

Following the reading of the bill, a motion was made and passed to forward it to the Committees on Good Governance, Internal Affairs, and Judiciary for proper scrutiny and review. The committees are expected to report back to plenary with recommendations.

If passed into law, “All Liberia Presidents’ Day” will become a new public holiday dedicated to national reflection and the acknowledgment of Liberia’s leadership journey.
