Dr. Towah Sr. Applauds Senate’s on G/Gedeh Varsity, Urges Swift Presidential Assent
Abuja, Nigeria – July 24, 2025 — In a landmark development hailed as a transformative step in Liberia’s higher education landscape, Chief Dr. William Deiyan Towah Sr., Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Grand Gedeh Community College (GGCC), has warmly welcomed the Liberian Senate’s recent passage of legislation conferring full university status on the institution, now to be known as Grand Gedeh University.
Expressing heartfelt appreciation on behalf of the Board, faculty, staff, students, and the broader Grand Gedeh community, Dr. Towah lauded the Senate’s decisive action as a monumental affirmation of the importance of inclusive educational progress and a bold move toward addressing the critical human capital needs of Liberia.
“This is a moment of immense pride and hope for Grand Gedeh County and Liberia at large,” said Dr. Towah, speaking from Abuja, Nigeria, where he serves as Director of Finance and Administration at the ECOWAS Court of Justice. “The Senate’s vote demonstrates a deep commitment to the principles of access, equity, and excellence in education. It is not just a name change—it is a declaration of potential, of growth, and of a brighter future for generations to come.”
Dr. Towah emphasized that the elevation of GGCC to university status represents more than institutional growth; it signifies an enduring commitment to national development. He noted that this transition will allow the institution to offer an expanded array of degree programs across key disciplines, foster academic research, and play a pivotal role in shaping Liberia’s next generation of leaders, professionals, and change-makers.
“This transition into Grand Gedeh University will have far-reaching implications,” he said. “It opens the door to more rigorous academic offerings, increased enrollment opportunities, and greater regional impact. The university will not only draw students from across the southeastern region but will also become a center for innovation, research, and socio-economic development in Liberia.”
While commending the Senate for its foresight and progressive leadership, Dr. Towah issued a passionate appeal to His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr., urging him to promptly sign the bill into law. He underscored the symbolic and practical importance of presidential assent, calling it the final yet most vital step in ushering in this new era for Grand Gedeh and the nation.
“We now respectfully and earnestly call on our esteemed President, who is also the Visitor to the institution, to append his signature to this visionary legislation,” Dr. Towah stated. “Such action will not only formalize the transformation of the college into a full-fledged university but will also send a powerful message that this administration stands firmly with the people of the Southeast, with the cause of education, and with the dreams of Liberia’s youth.”
He further noted that the Board of Trustees stands ready to guide the institution through this significant transition, maintaining the highest standards of academic excellence, institutional accountability, and community engagement. The Board is also committed to working with national and international partners to position the new university as a beacon of learning in Liberia and the sub-region.
“As we take this bold leap forward, we reaffirm our dedication to building a world-class university—one that produces graduates who are critical thinkers, ethical leaders, and productive citizens,” he added. “We look forward to partnering with government ministries, development agencies, private sector leaders, and academic institutions across the globe to realize this vision.”
Founded in 2011, the Grand Gedeh Community College has been a vital pillar of education and empowerment in the county, offering a strong academic foundation and contributing significantly to local capacity-building. Over the years, the college has remained steadfast in its mission to promote intellectual growth, support community development, and prepare students for impactful careers and civic engagement.
With the transition to university status now on the cusp of reality, the institution is poised to build upon its solid legacy, shaping the educational and developmental narrative of southeastern Liberia for decades to come.
