The Senqu Bridge is officially being launched today, 22 April 2026, in Mokhotlong, Lesotho, marking a major milestone in Phase II of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project

Built at a cost of approximately R2.4 billion, the bridge is one of three major crossings, alongside the Mabunyane and Khubelu bridges. These are designed to ensure continued access across the Polihali Reservoir once water levels rise and existing routes are submerged

Measuring about 825 metres in length and standing roughly 90 metres high, the Senqu Bridge will play a vital role in connecting Mokhotlong to the A1 route linking to Maseru, improving transport and accessibility in the region

Beyond infrastructure, this development also holds exciting potential for tourism in Lesotho. Improved road access to the highlands opens up more opportunities for travellers to explore remote and scenic areas, making destinations around Polihali more reachable. The bridge itself, along with the future reservoir, is expected to become a unique attraction for visitors, while also supporting the growth of local lodges, tour experiences, and community-based tourism

This milestone not only strengthens regional connectivity between Lesotho and South Africa but also contributes to long-term economic growth, water security, and the expansion of Lesotho’s tourism offering
