MASERU: Controversial alleged drug cartel member Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala has also been linked with Lesotho Prime Minister Sam Matekane.
According to the Sunday World, Machesetsa Mofomobe, the leader of the Basotho National Party (BNP), asked the Prime Minister whether Matlala attended his inauguration on 28 October 2022, and whether he had ever visited Matlala at his Gauteng residence. The questions were submitted in writing to Parliament and dated 31 July 2025, after a source disclosed the alleged relationship to Mofomobe.
Matlala's name was thrust into the media spotlight when KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, during a media briefing in July, said he was awarded a SAPS tender worth more than R360 million in 2024.
The alleged drug cartel member, who has been charged with the attempted murder of his ex-lover Tebogo Thobejane, also testified on Thursday that he attended King Mswati's birthday celebrations on an invitation by Queen Ntombi Tfwala. However, King Mswati's Spokesperson, Percy Simelane, denied the allegations, saying Matlala could have received the invitation through a third party.
