Florida's Boating Rights Under Threat: Take Action May 22 in Ocala

Make Your Voice Heard. Wear Orange. Protect Our Waterways.

On May 22, 2025, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will hold a critical meeting in Ocala to consider the creation of a Springs Protection Zone (SPZ) in Silver Glen Springs — a proposal that would prohibit anchoring, mooring, beaching, and grounding of vessels in the area.

While the goal of preserving eelgrass and spring ecosystems is shared by all, there is no conclusive scientific evidence that boaters are the primary cause of eelgrass degradation — not in Silver Glen, nor anywhere else in the state of Florida. In fact, similar closures have already taken place in Weeki Wachee and Nichlos Spring, and yet there has been no measurable improvement in eelgrass growth or ecosystem restoration.

This raises a serious question: Why are public access and recreation being limited without data to back it up?

This is a make-or-break moment.

We must show up — in numbers too big to ignore.

Why You Need to Be in Ocala on May 22
This decision sets a precedent. If SPZs are implemented here without evidence, more closures will follow statewide.

The data doesn’t support the restrictions. Boaters are being blamed without proof. Studies point to other causes — nutrient runoff, reduced water flow, and natural shifts — not responsible recreation.

Local communities will pay the price. Tourism, small businesses, and family traditions that rely on water access will be directly impacted.
