Did Jay-Z take over the Brooklyn Public Library?

Earlier this week, when lyrics from Jay-Z songs like “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)” and “Justify My Thug” appeared on the Art-Deco-style limestone facade of the Brooklyn Public Library’s main branch, fans and passers-by could only speculate on the occasion for the building’s sudden makeover. A surprise concert for the rapper’s home borough? A tribute to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop this summer?

The answer, it turned out, was neither — and also a secret even from the man himself.

When Jay-Z entered the library for a private event on Thursday, surrounded by an inner circle of family, friends and business associates, he was greeted by his band playing instrumental versions of his hits out front, and a career-spanning archival exhibition that he never asked for inside. The exhibition, called “The Book of Hov,” features artwork, music, memorabilia, ephemera and large-scale recreations of touchstones from a sprawling career. It was conceived by Jay-Z’s team as a surprise tribute and will run through the summer.

| One of my observations about relationships is that we don’t operate in a realistic range. 🏀

From a men’s perspective: dating who they can realistically afford.

From a women’s perspective: dating a man in a realistic income level, not a fantasy one.

I know we’re quick to run to blame social media for everything, but in this case, it’s the culprit… on both sides: above average, cute women getting DM’ed by blue checks & millionaires (who they’re patiently lying in wait to sweep them off their feet), then men having too much access to women, and both sides having the delusions of more quality options then there actually are.

In actuality, good, quality partners are scarce, and when we get them we have to carry the discernment to recognize that.

I don’t have it all figured out, but we do need to operate in reality more and close the relational gap between the two sexes that seems to be widening by the minute.

One of the solutions is operating more in a space of reality and not idealism.
