Chevy took a regular passenger car, packed it with the biggest engine they could build, and unleashed the 409—a powerhouse that would change the game.

The 409 wasn’t just another engine; it was a beast. You could order it in any full-size Chevy, but the Impala SS was the king of the big-block/four-speed manual combo.

With 425 horsepower in its top trim, this engine dominated the NHRA’s Super Stock class by 1962, and legends like Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins and Dave Strickler made history with it.

One of the most famous 409-powered drag cars? "Old Reliable," a ’62 Chevy that tore up the quarter-mile in under 13 seconds, thanks to some sneaky speed parts like the "Z-11" option heads and camshaft.
