Poinciana Paper Press is excited to again be part of Transforming Spaces!

Though not a stop on the tour weekend itself (May 30 & 31), the press will participate in its programming, opening the exhibition “Radical Acts of Publishing” on June 6th in conversation with the overall theme of Transforming Spaces this year, “Chasing Light,” in memory of the late Patricia Glinton-Meicholas, prolific Bahamian writer, cultural critic, and publisher.

For six weeks, twenty participants took part in a special incubator at Poinciana Paper Press and learned about the power of self publishing. In this final exhibition and exchange of works, these publications complicate the conventional models of “books” in content and materiality–as zines, chapbooks, and other unexpected formats–to activate and advance our literary voices.

Hi folks, thanks for keeping up with what I've been building through the press over the years. But it's time for me to focus on irl projects and interactions.

The digital world is not the real world. I am opting out of putting my time, money, and creativity into interactions that don't feel meaningful. I am concerned with the ways we are handing over our autonomy and imagination and intellectual property to data farms and AI bots in order to be "more productive." I am disappointed in the ways that "liking" and "sharing" and livestreams have stood in for actually showing up for events, talks, protests with undivided attention and engagement, as well as seeing my brand, copy, and in some cases my classes being lifted and remixed. So I am opting out. Being on here isn't productive--it's distracting and exhausting and frankly very dehumanizing. It's time to touch more paper, and less screens.

Poinciana Paper Press isn't closing. I will continue to offer classes and make books and collaborate and host artists and writers. If you'd like to keep up with what's going on, please sign up for my newsletter at tinyurl.com/hotoffthepppress. Or come by and check out books in Rabble! Bookshop, or chill in the library and touch paper instead of screens for a while, during our open-to-the-public days: Thursdays-Saturdays.

The press social pages, as well as my own personal pages, will remain for the archive as well as to avoid profile cloning. Occasionally an urgent update may appear, or I or the press may get tagged. I may check in with my feed occasionally. But I am not active. I am not on my phone. I don't believe we should have 24/7 access to anyone. Screen time will be done during specific work hours.

Therefore any messages sent via Messenger or IG will not reach me in a timely manner. So I suggest emailing me at sonia(at)poincianapaperpress.com or calling our press phone at 394-4192 where you will likely be prompted to leave a message.

Thanks for engaging. Looking forward to seeing you IRL sometime.

We're closing out Pride month with our friends Equality Bahamas and we are making books! (What else?)

Following the writing workshop with Muriel Leung at the start of the month, we are following up with an opportunity to make our words visible through making our own books.

You don't need to have taken the writing workshop earlier this month--come by and learn some quick & simple binding structures as well as design basics to turn your words into tangible vessels to share immediately.

It's FREE! Join us on Wednesday July 30th at 6pm at # 12 Parkgate Road to take back your means of production ✊
