“As for those lores, White-throated Sparrows are unable to produce yellow, so the birds depend on a diet rich in carotenoids—pigments manufactured mainly by plants—to provide this golden hue. Their fall and winter diet of seeds and fruit—especially wild cranberries, blueberries, and grapes—give the sparrows a carotenoid boost. “ (source:audubon.org)

An eastern gray squirrel enjoys a snack of foraged food while perched on an oak tree. Native to the eastern United States, these squirrels are an invasive species across much of western North America. Unlike the native western gray squirrels, which are gray, white, and black, eastern gray squirrels often have a yellowish-brown hue on their face and tail. They build nests called dreys in trees, using a mix of leaves, twigs, moss, and grass. In suburban areas, these nests are often recognizable as large, dense clumps nestled high in the branches.

I was setting up my tripod then I heard something fly away a few feet behind me along a pond bank. I didn’t see this green heron until I saw it land on a log in the water. I also never saw it flex its crown feathers. It turns out that means they are “alarmed or agitated,” according to

HAPPY BIRD DAY!!!

I have seen Rainbow Lorikeets in the wild while visiting Australia. However, I was able to get up close to a few of them thanks to . I was one of the many guests honored with the opportunity to feed nectar to these (free ranged) Rainbow Lorikeets. Shortly before their morning feeding, which occurs twice daily, something startled the company enough to prompt them to take flight as a group. It took approximately 20 minutes for them to return. During this period, not all of the guests present remained to wait, but fortunately, I persevered.

[Facts]

Rainbow lorikeets were introduced to Western Australia in the 1960s… by accident.

According to the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, the lorikeet population in Perth was established from fewer than 10 escaped or released caged birds.

Post Australia birds

This shot was taken at while I was in their Grace’s Bird Garden

[Facts]
Rose-crowned Fruit-Doves are found in coastal tall tropical and sub-tropical forests, particularly with dense vine growth, in monsoon rainforest and tall woodlands near rainforest with many fruiting trees. They are sometimes found in mangroves.

They are listed as vulnerable in New South Wales, with threats including: rainforest clearing and fragmentation, logging, weeds and increased fire regimes altering habitat, and the removal of Camphor Laurel, an introduced tree that has become an important food source, without appropriate alternatives.

I spotted this soaring White-bellied Sea-eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster) while visiting a wetland in Australia.

According to the Australian Museum, “It is a skilled hunter, and will attack prey up to the size of a swan. Sea-Eagles also feed on carrion (dead prey) such as sheep and fish along the waterline. They harass smaller birds, forcing them to drop any food that they are carrying. Sea-Eagles feed alone, in pairs or in family groups”

“The willie wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys) is named for its habit of wagging its tail from side to side while foraging on the ground. The willie wagtail also briefly flashes its wings and makes short zig-zagging runs to flush insects from the ground cover. ” (source: Wikipedia)
