Disney Cruise Line is set to launch a brand-new cruise ship in Japan by 2029, in collaboration with Oriental Land Co. (OLC), the company behind Tokyo Disney Resort. This vessel, inspired by the design of the Disney Wish, will become one of the largest cruise ships in Japan, featuring around 1,250 staterooms and accommodating up to 4,000 passengers.

Highlights:

• Joint Project: The cruise is a partnership between Disney Cruise Line and OLC, marking a major expansion of Disney’s presence in Asia.

• Construction: Built by the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, the ship will be the third in the Triton class, sharing design and features with the Disney Wish.

• Year-Round Homeport: The ship will be permanently based in Tokyo, offering cruises throughout the year.

• Debut: The ship is expected to set sail in 2029.

• Passenger Capacity: Designed to hold approximately 4,000 guests in 1,250 rooms.

• Onboard Experience: Guests can look forward to Disney’s trademark entertainment, dining, and hospitality, with elements specially adapted for Japanese culture and preferences.

• Cruise Options: Initially, the ship will offer shorter voyages departing from the Tokyo area, with the possibility of international routes being added later.

• Pricing: Fares for two- to four-night trips are projected to range from ¥100,000 to ¥300,000 per person.

This marks the first time a Disney cruise ship will operate full-time from Japan, promising a unique blend of Disney magic with a distinctly local flair.

Since June 21, 2025, a continuous swarm of earthquakes has shaken the Tokara Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture, southern Japan—totaling at least 474 recorded tremors by June 26.

• The most powerful quakes reached magnitude 5.1, with Japanese seismic intensity levels hitting 4—enough to startle residents and rattle dishes.

• The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued increased alerts, warning that a magnitude‑6 event is possible and urging residents to stay alert, especially given the archipelago’s volcanic nature.

• The heightened activity coincides with an eruption at nearby Mount Shinmoe, which has reignited public anxiety—some even referencing a viral manga prediction of a major disaster in early July, though scientists stress there’s no scientific basis for such forecasts.

What This Means for Locals & Travelers

• Safety: No damage has been widely reported so far, but residents are advised to stay prepared—keep emergency kits ready and stay informed of JMA updates.

• Travel: No large-scale travel disruptions have been announced, but it’s smart to monitor local advisories if you’re heading to the region.

The president of Tokyo Disney Resort’s operator, Wataru Takahashi, said they may lower ticket prices as inflation is causing people to cut back on extra spending.

Oriental Land Co., which runs both Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea, is considering adjusting ticket prices or offering a wider price range based on expected demand. Right now, a one-day ticket costs between 7,900 yen (about $55) and 10,900 yen for adults.

Takahashi made these comments on June 6, 2025, while also discussing future plans for the parks, including major redevelopments as part of the company’s strategy through 2035.

He also mentioned the company’s new cruise ship project, expected to launch in 2028. He described it as a floating mix of a hotel and theme park, where guests can enjoy shows without the usual limitations—like needing to win a seat through a lottery system.

Visitors to Takaikamishima, a small island in western Japan, are greeted by colorful manga characters that now outnumber the island’s 11 residents.

Over 30 murals of popular manga characters decorate buildings near the harbor. This is part of a project to bring new life to the island and make it a special spot for manga fans. Takaikamishima, located in the Seto Inland Sea in Ehime Prefecture, hopes to stay on the map by becoming a manga-themed destination.
