On October 20th, the Federation not only celebrates the International Day of the Air Traffic Controller but also commemorates one hundred years of Air Traffic Control. A mid-air collision over France in 1922 kicked off a global industry that, one century later, is responsible for the safety of over four billion passengers annually.

Through the daily commitment of tens of thousands of air traffic controllers, air travel has evolved into the safest form of transport. Even as technology has evolved dramatically in those 100 years, humans are still very much at the centre of the air traffic management system. The centenary celebration is not only an opportunity to look back, but to look ahead at the future of our profession, and the many challenges it faces, including environmental concerns.
