Killings of those accused of being informers could increase during election period

Government staff and the people are accused of being decoys and more killings of them could take place during the upcoming elections, so effective and preventive measures would be needed, said Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

He said the above at the meeting of the SSPC held in Naypyidaw on August 12. There may be individuals and organizations local and abroad that could do subversive acts not to make the election succeed and they could disrupt the election in various ways, said Chairman of the SSPC.

" Killings of government staff and people after being accused of informers could take place more, so effective and preventive measures will be needed. Those culprits will be identified collaboratively and it's necessary to prosecute them as soon as possible." said Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

He was banned from contesting elections after being arrested for high treason during the National League for Democracy (NLD) government, and he would only be allowed to contest the elections if the President lifts the ban, Dr. Aye Maung, chairman of the Arakan Front Party (AFP), told CNI News.

Dr. Aye Maung was arrested and imprisoned by the NLD government in January 2018, claiming that his speeches at a ceremony marking the 233rd anniversary of the fall of the Rakhine Kingdom in Rathedaung, northern Rakhine State, was the same as high treason.

The NLD government then charged Dr. Aye Maung with high treason under sections 121, 171, and 172 of the Constitution and defamation of the state under sections 505(a) and 505(b) of the Constitution, sentenced him to 20 years in prison, disqualified him from the Hluttaw, and declared him ineligible to run the election in future election.

KIA won't back down as rare earth is its trump card

Therefore, he said, those currently ruling the country would have to try to meet the necessary number of candidates in the upcoming election.

“In the current political situation, in my opinion, they will try to meet the necessary number of candidates in the upcoming election.. Only when there are enough representatives, the Hluttaw can be called. If the Hluttaw was to be called for the second time, current rulers of the country may lose their dignity. So, they will try to meet the necessary number of candidates, I think. According to the constitution, the Tatmadaw has taken 25 percent of all the seats in the Hluttaw. If more than half of the representatives attend, it will have a quorum. Elections must be held for more than half of the representatives. I think they can do that. Because they have announced that they will hold elections in the 267 townships, it is more than half." said Sai Htay Aung.
