Erdene Zuu Monastery – Mongolia’s First Buddhist Monastery

Tucked away in the wide open steppes of Central Mongolia lies a place where time stands still — Erdene Zuu Monastery, the very first Buddhist monastery in the country, built in 1586. Surrounded by 108 sacred stupas and the ancient walls of what was once the heart of the Mongol Empire, this monastery carries centuries of history, prayer, and spiritual resilience.

Erdene Zuu was constructed using stones from the ruins of Karakorum, the once-glorious capital of Genghis Khan’s empire. Though the city itself faded into history, its spirit continues to live on through these temple walls.
