Macau, with all its activities, is gradually returning to normal after the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) issued Typhoon Signal No. 3, replacing Signal No. 8, at 11 pm as Typhoon Ragasa continues to move further away from the SAR.

In addition, the local government terminated the city’s Immediate Prevention Stage at 11 pm. All emergency shelters were also closed as soon as the typhoon signal was downgraded.

At the same time, all four cross-sea bridges in Macau along with the Lotus Bridge, as well as Light Rapid Transit (LRT) and ferry services resumed operations.

Meanwhile, the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) has announced that secondary and higher education will resume classes tomorrow (25 September), while arrangements for primary, kindergarten and special education will depend on whether the current Signal No. 3 will remain in force at 6:30 am tomorrow morning.

The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) may replace the current Typhoon Signal No. 8 with Signal No. 3 between 9 pm and midnight “depending on the situation”, the bureau has announced on its website.

According to the weather bureau, Typhoon Ragasa made landfall at Yangjiang, Guangdong at 6 pm and is gradually moving away from Macau. The wind in Macau is expected to gradually weaken to moderate this evening but there will still be frequent heavy showers and thunderstorms tonight.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Bualoi has entered into the Philippines Area of Responsibility (PAR), where the storm is known as Opong, moving towards the Southeast Asian country and is forecast to head towards China’s Hainan Island.

Based on the current forecast, at 2 pm today, Bualoi was estimated to be about 2,360km southeast of Macau and is forecast to move west at around 15km/h. However, SMG has not given further details on Bualoi, such as the forecast typhoon signals or how significant the impact will be.

The lower deck of Sai Van Bridge, which was closed since yesterday evening due to Super Typhoon Ragasa, was reopened by local authorities at 4 pm today coinciding with Macau’s Typhoon Signal No. 10 downgraded to Signal No. 8, which will remain in force for a period of time.

In addition, since the water level in low-lying areas started to recede, power supply that was temporarily suspended in areas affected by flooding is gradually resuming, and so are 27 public car parks in the low-lying areas, as Ragasa begins to move away from Macau and its intensity weakening.

However, Macau is still under the influence of Ragasa’s “core circulation” and the local wind force is expected to still reach force 8 or above, SMG has warned.

The public is advised to still pay attention to the impact of severe weather. Although the flood level has receded, the tide difference remains high. Only when the floor risk has passed will all storm surge warnings be cancelled.

Meanwhile, the Civil Protection Operations Centre has recorded a total of 207 incidents throughout the Macau SAR, including 40 cases of “buildings/lamp posts/trees that are on the verge of collapse or have collapsed”, 125 cases of “concrete, signboards, windows, canopies or other objects falling or swinging, as well as six cases of “scaffolding, scales or other construction facilities falling or swinging.
