Macau is expected to welcome an average of 150,000 visitors per day during the upcoming eight-day National Day holiday, with the city’s annual visitor arrivals in 2025 projected to reach 39 million.

The estimates were reaffirmed on Monday by Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, director of the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO). She emphasised that the government’s current focus is to divert the tourist influx across different districts, aiming to stimulate local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The National Day Golden Week, one of mainland China’s most significant travel periods, will run from 1-8 October this year. The holiday coincides with the lunar calendar-based Mid-Autumn Festival on 6 October, adding to the travel momentum.

Speaking to local media on the sidelines of a public event, Senna Fernandes said the government anticipates a daily average of 150,000 visitors—or a total of 1.2 million visitors—during the break, representing a 7 percent increase from last year’s record daily average of 141,000 visitors.

She attributed the expected rise to the holiday overlap and visa policy easing introduced earlier this year.

Starting in 2025, mainland Chinese residents with household registration in nearby Zhuhai can apply for a Macau visa once per week, a significant change from the previous limit of one visit every two months. Meanwhile, those with household registration or residence permits in Hengqin are now eligible for multiple-entry visas, allowing for more frequent visits.

“Recently, we’ve seen local hotel occupancy rates consistently hovering around 90 percent, and even exceeding that on certain days,” added the MGTO official. “So we hope that during this [National Day] Golden Week, the hotel industry can continue to thrive and maintain strong performance.”
