Upwards of two million visitors descended upon Macau over the course of the 15th National Games, the organiser announced.

Mainland Chinese officials unveiled the figure on Friday during a press conference summarising the event, which took place between 9 and 21 November.

The summary, held in Shenzhen, concluded that as many as 479 games were held in Macau, with 22 gold medals conferred among a total of 74 recognitions.

The authorities said that Macau saw over 1,800 participants, including leaders, coaches, athletes, and technical referees, alongside 3,500 volunteers.

Macau played host to four competitive events: table tennis, three‑on‑three basketball, five‑on‑five basketball (men’s under‑18 category), and volleyball (women’s adult category), as well as karate.

The authorities added that Macau proved itself to be a vital hub for sports, capable of organising two mega sporting events simultaneously.

Part of the 15th National Games was held in Macau to coincide with the Macau Grand Prix, intentionally to boost visitation.

Official records show that more than eight new world records were set during the games.

Recently, Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai told lawmakers that Guangdong province, now billed as the Greater Bay Area including Hong Kong and Macau, could aim even higher to host the Summer Olympic Games.

SJM Holdings is not taking over Casino Ponte 16, with the decision announced on Thursday pledging a smooth transition for its own local staff.

SJM Resorts, a subsidiary of SJM Holdings, said in a statement that it would not ‘proceed with the previously stated intention to acquire the property’.

This surprise decision, as SJM stated, follows a ‘thorough assessment’ of long-term business planning, commercial considerations and resource prioritisation across the group’s portfolio.

SJM said that it had entered into a ‘mutual termination agreement’ with Pier 16 Entertainment Group Corporation over its decision to bow out.

As a result, Casino Ponte 16 is slated to stop running on 28 November (Friday).

Calling the outcome a ‘disciplined approach’ to capital deployment, SJM said that it intended to focus on ‘strengthening core operations’ in line with market developments and long-term strategies.

All gaming tables and machines will then have been moved to other casinos under SJM, the casino operator stated.

It also urged gamblers to redeem related chips, deposits, or cash rebates at other SJM casinos.

In addition, all ‘local employees’ hired by SJM will remain employed and be assigned to other gaming operations.

For ‘local employees’ not hired by SJM, the gaming company said that it would invite them to fill vacancies elsewhere across the group under ‘equal circumstances’.

According to a Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau statement, as many as 1,025 team members are set for the transition.

The authorities pledged on the same day to ensure compliance with all legal steps for a stable and orderly service cessation.

Ponte 16 is a joint venture between SJM Holdings and Success Universe Group, both listed in Hong Kong.

According to its interim report, Success Universe saw its first-half loss narrowed to HK$33.7 million from HK$35.47 million a year earlier.

SJM Holdings announced last week that it had suffered a sizeable profit loss in the third quarter, with its profit down by over 91 per cent from the same period of 2024.
