Eight people have been caught for their involvement in a cross‑border crypto fraud scheme that allegedly amassed nearly MOP100 million (US$12.37 million) in illegal gains.

Judiciary Police (PJ) spokespeople told a press conference on Tuesday that the security force worked with their counterparts from the Hong Kong Police Force in a coordinated mission between 1 and 3 August, successfully dismantling the suspected syndicate posing as an investment promoter for a coffee business.

Of the eight suspects apprehended, two women were arrested by PJ officers.

The agency said that at least nine Macau residents reported losing as much as MOP3.6 million to the scheme. In Hong Kong, as many as 225 complaints were filed, with reported losses amounting to HK$94 million.

The pair apprehended in Macau, aged 52 and 64, have already been sent to the Public Prosecutions Office for further action.

An ongoing probe launched by the PJ suggests that there were at least 40 Macau victims.

As the Judiciary Police revealed, the two Macau women arrested were responsible for local operations.

In November 2025, the duo received instructions from their Hong Kong‑based boss to extend a coffee brand to the busy Horta e Costa district.

They reportedly handed out free beverages to attract attention before casting the net wider to ensnare potential investors.

Interested investors were promised high returns from a technological project linked to coffee production.

PJ detectives said that the syndicate strategically adopted cryptocurrencies and a pyramid scheme to evade investigation.

However, the pair denied any wrongdoing, stressing that they had never met their recruiters in person.

All contact was made online, with funds used to operate the alleged racket coming from Hong Kong.

As part of the scheme, victims were instructed to wire money to a designated crypto mobile app, which PJ investigators said operated until July this year.

It was then that victims realised the coffee shop had stopped operating.
