Continuing education is to remain a major driver of job market competitiveness in the near future, despite a foreseeable surge in university graduates.

The summary comes from a recent TDM phone-in programme, where Wong Hoipan, an assistant professor from the University of Macau, said that the number of university graduates could rise by 20 per cent to 65 per cent over the next decade.

“How to supply young people with jobs is a long-term challenge,” Wong said.

He explained that traditional industries have already reached a point of saturation, while nascent sectors are yet to be established enough to produce value-added work opportunities.

“Young people have rather high income expectations, hence the issue of skill mismatch,” he told the show.

He urged younger job seekers to lower their expectations and start by accumulating work experience in an increasingly heated market.

Moreover, he also urged further education as a means of lifting one’s pay, citing data that suggest graduates with a master’s degree earn a median income that is MOP 9,000 higher than those with a bachelor’s.

Choi Chin Man, another guest speaker who heads a human resources association, stressed uneven development as a challenge to the labour market, illustrating that “demand for workers in industries such as hospitality, food and beverage, retail, and construction remains steady.”

Between January and June, the government managed to match job seekers with work over 5,200 times via support services, with over half of them under the age of 35.
