JMA puts storm center near islands Sunday; NWS says most models favor southern Marianas passage

The Japan Meteorological Agency's Oct. 14 forecast places Invest 96W near the Marianas on Sunday, Oct. 18, before the system moves west of the islands Monday.

JMA projects the storm reaching severe tropical storm strength Sunday and typhoon strength Monday.

The National Weather Service in Tiyan, in its 7:44 p.m. Wednesday update, said most models favor a passage through the southern Marianas between late Saturday evening and Sunday night.

However, individual tracks range from south of Guam to far north of Saipan. The exact track and intensity remain uncertain.

🚨 WHAT THE LATEST NWS FORECAST SAYS:
• Saturday: Weather conditions may begin deteriorating.
• Sunday: Worst conditions expected around this time, with locally heavy showers, near-gale winds and thunderstorms.
• Rainfall: 5–8 inches Saturday through Monday, locally up to 12 inches. Flooding and mudslides are possible.
• Seas and surf: Significant increases in seas beginning Friday night, with dangerous surf probable this weekend.

Residents of Saipan, Tinian, Rota, the northern islands of the CNMI and Guam should continue storm preparations and follow official updates.
