During the upcoming general elections, can Malta's alternative parties give the government and the opposition a run for their money?

In this special couplet of full-length interviews, The Critical Angle Project seeks an answer to this burning question.

On Monday, we spoke with ADPD chairperson Sandra Gauci and Partit Momentum secretary-general Mark Camilleri Gambin.

Footage shot at Tuesday's Valletta rally in support of Palestine.

Protesters demanded three things from the Maltese government: the immediate recognition of the state of Palestine, a ban on transport of dual-use (citizen and military) goods on Malta-flagged ships, and an unequivocal condemnation of Israel's genocide in Palestine, accompanied by calls for sanctioning and isolation of the apartheid state.

While the protest was ongoing, prime minister Robert Abela publicly claimed - for the third time - that Malta is yet again set to recognise the state of Palestine in September.

Given the sheer level of destruction we've seen in Palestine over the past two years, many protesters argued that there will hardly be any state left to recognise by the time the Maltese government gets around to doing so.

Though this isn't the first local protest held in support of Palestine, Tuesday's turnout was one of the most significant since 7 October, 2023.

Footage taken a few minutes before the start of Monday's press conference.

Civil society activists can be seen heckling prime minister Robert Abela as he gives a comment to members of the press shortly before he went into Parliament for a few minutes.

The government's proposed legislative changes, which would effectively transfer all decision-making power to politically appointed members of planning and environmental entities, have sparked major backlash and unified opposition from across the board.

Shortly before leaving Parliament, the prime minister attempted to persuade activists that their fears were unfounded and that their understanding of these proposed amendments was simply "incorrect."

Photos from Monday's press conference, called by several civil society organisations who stand united against the government's proposed legal amendments.

The legal amendments in question would effectively eliminate what's left of Malta's environmental and planning safeguards and pave the way for rogue developers seeking to sanction illegalities.
