They shut down paradise so nature could breathe again.
Maya Bay was once a symbol of over tourism, with crowds, speedboats, and damaged reefs threatening its survival. Thailand chose an unconventional path by shutting the entire area down, fully aware it would mean losing massive tourism revenue in the short term.
The decision paid off. With no daily disturbances, coral systems slowly healed and marine life returned to levels not seen in years. Today, access is tightly controlled, proving that preservation and tourism can coexist when nature is put first.
