On 16 May, the government told the world that Sergeant First Class Mohamed Mahudhee – the Coast Guard diver sent into the Devana Kandu caves to recover the bodies of four Italian divers – was found unconscious by his fellow divers and died of decompression sickness.

His family says that is not what happened.

According to his brother, drawing on accounts from the divers involved and footage shown to the family by the MNDF, Mahudhee became separated from his team when his guide line pocket came loose. He was found more than 80 minutes later, alone in the cave’s second chamber at 69 metres, his regulator out of his mouth, his tank empty.

Hospital records shown to the Maldives Independent by the family corroborate central elements of their account. Mahudhee had no pulse from the moment he surfaced. ADK certified the cause of death without knowing his dive profile, the depth he was found at, or how long he was underwater and recommended a forensic post-mortem examination it could not perform. None was ever conducted.

His parents have written to the police asking for the truth. The death certificate remains unchanged.
