The leadership of the Child Advocacy Center has called for increased support for survivors of child abuse in Malawi, saying limited assistance remains a major challenge in helping victims and their families rebuild their lives.

Executive Director Memory Ngosi made the remarks when the organization assisted the family of Agness Kazembe, whose 12-year-old daughter survived sexual abuse in Area 25, Lilongwe.

With support from well-wishers, the organization donated food and non-food items including clothes, blankets, 20 packets of maize flour, 20 packets of porridge flour, K60,000 for rent, and K100,000 as start-up capital.

Ngosi said many families face serious financial difficulties after such incidents, stressing the need for more people and organizations to support survivors.

“This support is part of our response programme aimed at ensuring survivors of child abuse and their families receive the assistance they deserve to heal and rebuild their lives,” she said.

She also commended Kazembe for reporting the case and consistently following it up to ensure justice is served.

Kazembe expressed gratitude for the support, saying the assistance has brought hope to her family during a difficult time.

MERA HIKES FUEL PRICES

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has increased fuel prices following a review under the Automatic Pricing Mechanism for January 2026.

According to MERA, the landed cost of both petrol and diesel exceeded the five percent trigger band, prompting an upward price adjustment effective today.

Petrol is now selling at K4,965 per litre from K3,499, while diesel has risen to K4,945 per litre from K3,500.

MERA says the adjustment is necessary to ensure sustainability of fuel supply and to support key levies that fund road maintenance and rural electrification programmes.

UGANDANS VOTE AMID FEARS OF POLITICAL UNREST

Uganda is on edge as polls have opened, with President Yoweri Museveni expected to extend his four-decade rule.

This comes amid a police crackdown on the opposition, fears of violence, and an internet shutdown.

The East African nation is holding a contentious general election today after a Ugandan government regulatory body instructed mobile network operators to block public internet access, starting on Tuesday evening.

Polling stations were slow to open, as is usual in Uganda, but voting was under way shortly after 7am.

There were heavy police and army patrols in the border town of Jinja, according to AFP News team.

Partial results are expected later in the day after polls close. More than 21.6 million voters have registered for the election.

In a country where 70 percent of people are under age 35, high unemployment is a key issue for first-time voters.

The United Nations Human Rights Office stressed on Wednesday that “open access to communication and information is key to free & genuine elections”.

The government of Museveni, 81, has been accused of overseeing a years-long crackdown on its critics, arresting political opposition leaders and their supporters.

Museveni is being challenged in Thursday’s vote by pop star-turned-politician Bobi Wine, whose campaign rallies have been routinely disrupted by the Ugandan authorities.

As with his 2021 campaign, hundreds of Bobi Wine’s supporters have been arrested in the run-up to the vote.

He has been wearing a flak jacket at rallies, describing the election as a “war” and Museveni as a “military dictator”.
