Open Letter to His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Malawi, Arthur Peter Mutharika
Subject: A Request to Prioritize Social Media Monetization for Malawian Creators
Your Excellency,
My name is Stargic , a Malawian content creator and digital educator. Through my page, I teach people in our local language about phone settings, data saving, security, and other technology tips. My videos reach thousands of Malawians every week, helping them use their smartphones wisely, reduce data costs, and solve everyday phone problems.
Like many other young creators, I use my platform to educate, inspire, and represent Malawi online. But despite our effort and global reach, we cannot earn from our work because Malawi is NOT yet eligible for Facebook, TikTok, or YouTube monetization. Only few monetise their content through using friends living in countries that are eligible for monetisation which is a risk to them as their friends cannot be fully trusted.
Why We Need Your Support
Countries like Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa already benefit because their governments worked with these platforms to enable monetization. Imagine, i once monetised my page using a friend in south africa, i could earn up to $680 per month, but unfortunately my friend almost got my page hacked, so i removed him, hence im no longer monetised.
Malawi is left behind mainly because:
1. We donβt have international payment systems like PayPal or Stripe.
2. There are no clear digital policies for online income and taxation.
3. Thereβs limited engagement between government and tech companies like Meta, Google, or TikTok.
My Humble Request
Your Excellency, I kindly ask that you speak with or instruct the Minister of Information and Technology to make this issue a national priority.
With your leadership, Malawi can:
1. Work with PayPal, Stripe, Airtel Money, and TNM Mpamba to open safe international payment channels.
2. Create a Digital Economy Policy that supports online in.
