Christmas for orphans

We are organizing a Christmas party again to cheer up orphans and vulnerable children living with HIV and AIDS in Bangwe, Blantyre, which we care for at our orphanage and school care center.

Nature Saturday: Lake Chilwa

Lake Chilwa is the second-largest lake in Malawi after Lake Malawi. It is in eastern Zomba District, near the border with Mozambique. Approximately 60 km long and 40 km wide, the lake is surrounded by extensive wetlands. There is a large island in the middle of the lake called Chisi Island. The lake has no outlet, and the level of water is greatly affected by seasonal rains and summer evaporation. In 1968, the lake disappeared during exceptionally dry weather.

The Danish International Development Agency donated funds to ensure preservation of the lake and its wetlands, to improve the production of rice and other crops, and to help safeguard the habitat of the flora and fauna of the lake region.

The Lake Chilwa Basin Climate Change Adaption Programme (LCBCCAP) has been introduced to conserve the sensitive area, which is not only an important wetland for local fauna, but also a major source for fish products in the region.

Lake Chilwa was designated Malawi’s first Ramsar Site, Wetland of International Importance in 1997, and supports massive populations of important bird species including flamingos, pelicans and the localised black egret, while the baobabs on Chisi Island host the likes of trumpeter hornbill and various snake eagles.

Kuti Wildlife Reserve

Kuti Wildlife Reserve is an ideal getaway for peace and quiet, located just a one-hour drive from Lilongwe on the way to the lake, just before Salima Town. It is a great destination for families, as the reserve has no predators, making it very safe for visitors to walk, run, or cycle. Guests can enjoy beautiful sunsets, excellent wildlife viewing, and an impressive diversity of birdlife, with over 250 species recorded. The reserve runs entirely on solar power, is eco-friendly, and maintains an indigenous tree reforestation program.

In partnership with the Lilongwe Wildlife Trust, Kuti runs a One Health Program that integrates wildlife and domestic veterinary research with human health initiatives. This outreach supports surrounding communities and provides a scientific foundation for addressing health issues affecting both people and animals.

Kuti also works with Conservation Research Africa and African Bat Conservation, who conduct research on bats, their habitats, and their distribution. These partners additionally manage bat relocations and exclusions.

Schools, universities, and conservation groups, both local and international, visit the reserve for conservation education focused on biodiversity.

The reserve offers guided walks, guided self-drives, and opportunities for visitors to self-drive independently to view wildlife. Bicycle hire is available, and the site includes conference facilities and self-catering accommodation that can also host private functions. Fully serviced events are offered as well.

The bar and restaurant facilities are open to both day visitors and overnight guests.
