∆When the United States and Israel began hammering Iran’s military infrastructure, many people expected Russia and China to step in. After all, Iran has long been presented as part of a powerful anti-Western bloc alongside Moscow and Beijing.

But when the pressure came, those “allies” went quiet.

No military support.
No intervention.
Just diplomatic statements calling for restraint.

Which raises a very uncomfortable question.

Were Russia and China ever really Iran’s allies at all?

Because if you look at the relationship closely, it starts to look far less like a strategic alliance and far more like a business arrangement.

Russia has sold Iran weapons for decades — tanks, aircraft, missile systems like the S-300. But that relationship was never about shared ideology or loyalty. It was about influence in the Middle East and selling hardware.

China’s relationship is even simpler.

Energy.

China’s economy runs on oil, and Iran has plenty of it. In 2021 the two countries signed a 25-year cooperation deal that was supposed to transform Iran’s economy with huge Chinese investment.

But look at the numbers.

Despite all the headlines, Chinese investment in Iran over the last 15 years barely reached around $27 billion.

What actually flowed into Iran wasn’t massive infrastructure development.

It was cheap Chinese consumer goods flooding Iranian markets — often undercutting Iran’s own domestic industries.

In other words, Iran wasn’t really a strategic partner.

It was a supplier.

And suppliers are replaceable.

When the missiles began flying and the Iranian leadership structure was hit, Moscow and Beijing did what major powers often do in these situations.

They calculated the risk.

And they stepped back.

Because going to war with the United States to defend a trading partner is a completely different calculation than buying their oil or selling them weapons.

So the real lesson here might be this:

In international politics, alliances are rarely about friendship

∆The humanitarian impact of the conflict between Israel, the US, and Iran is severe, with over 1,320 people killed in Iran and more than 120 in Lebanon. The conflict has led to massive displacement, with residents fleeing Israeli strikes in Lebanon and Iran. The UN rights chief has called for transparent and impartial investigations into alleged strikes on schools and hospitals.¹ ² ³

Key Humanitarian Concerns:

- Displacement: Over half a million people have been displaced in Lebanon, with many sleeping rough.
- Civilian Casualties: More than 1,200 people have been killed in Iran, and over 120 in Lebanon.
- Infrastructure Damage: Strikes have damaged homes, hospitals, and schools, disrupting essential services.
- Economic Impact: The conflict has disrupted global supply chains, causing fuel shortages and economic instability.

The international community is responding with aid efforts, but challenges persist due to restricted access and escalating costs.⁴

∆The conflict between Israel, the US, and Iran is intensifying, with both sides exchanging strikes and warnings of further escalation. Here are the latest developments:

- Israel and US Strikes on Iran: Israel has launched a broad-scale wave of strikes on Iran, targeting Hezbollah infrastructure in Beirut's southern suburbs. The US has also struck an Iranian drone carrier, which was roughly the size of a World War II aircraft carrier, and has sunk over 30 Iranian ships.¹ ² ³
- Iran's Response: Iran has launched missiles at Tel Aviv, and its military says it's ready for a long war. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned that the US cannot be trusted and is not open to negotiations.
- Regional Impact: The conflict has led to evacuations in Lebanon, with residents fleeing Israeli strikes. The UAE has intercepted missiles and drones, while Saudi Arabia has destroyed drones east of Riyadh.
- Global Concerns: The US has warned that strikes against Iran will surge dramatically, and NATO has increased its defense posture. The conflict has also led to oil price fluctuations and disruptions in global supply chains.⁴

∆The Israel-USA-Iran war broke out on February 28, 2026, following a joint US-Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear facilities and military infrastructure. The attack, codenamed Operation Epic Fury and Operation Roaring Lion, was reportedly triggered by intelligence suggesting Iran's uranium enrichment had reached weaponization levels ¹ ².

*Key Events Leading to the War:*

- *Iran's Nuclear Program*: Tensions escalated due to Iran's nuclear ambitions, with Western countries fearing it could develop nuclear weapons.
- *Proxy Conflicts*: Iran and Israel engaged in proxy wars in Syria, Lebanon, and Gaza, increasing the risk of direct confrontation.
- *US Withdrawal from JCPOA*: The US withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal, reimposing sanctions and heightening tensions.
- *Iranian Protests*: Mass protests in Iran, driven by economic crisis and government repression, added to regional instability.
- *US Military Buildup*: The US amassed military assets in the region, including aircraft carriers and warships, amid warnings of potential strikes ³ ⁴ ⁵.

The joint attack killed Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, prompting Iran to launch retaliatory strikes on Israel and US bases in the region. The conflict has drawn in multiple countries, including Lebanon's Hezbollah, and threatens global oil supplies and stability ¹ ⁶ ⁴.

∆Senior advisers to President Donald Trump would prefer Israel strike Iran before the United States launches an assault on the country, Politico reported, quoting two people familiar with ongoing discussions.

These Trump administration officials are privately arguing that an Israeli attack would trigger Iran to retaliate, helping muster support from American voters for a US strike, according to the report.

“There’s thinking in and around the administration that the politics are a lot better if the Israelis go first and alone and the Iranians retaliate against us, and give us more reason to take action,” said a source quoted in the report.

- *International Response*: The US is involved in peace efforts, with Special Envoy Steve Witkoff discussing a Gaza peace plan with officials from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey.
- *Controversy and Tensions*: Israeli strikes target alleged Hezbollah positions, and settlement expansion in the West Bank continues, sparking international concern ¹ ² ³.
