Malawi has launched the Improving Secondary Education in Malawi Phase II (ISEM II) project at Mitundu Community Day Secondary School in Lilongwe, aimed at strengthening infrastructure, improving teaching and learning environments, enhancing school governance, and promoting inclusion for vulnerable learners.

Minister of Education, Science and Technology Bright Msaka officially launched the initiative, saying it responds to rising demand following Free Secondary Education and commending development partners for their support.

European Union Ambassador Daniel Aristi Gaztelumendi said EUR 55 million ISEM II programme has improved infrastructure, and announced additional EUR 68 million to Empowering the Youth of Malawi Through Education and Skills (EYES) of Malawi initiative.

CDF PROGRAMME RECRUITS STAFF

The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ben Phiri has disclosed that the Ministry will employ 687 Malawians to work under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) programme.

Phiri said for the first time in the country’s history, aside the 687 officers, 36 qualified engineers have been recruited under the same MK5bn CDF programme with support from the World Bank.

BOTSWANA WINS $100M SOLAR FUNDING

Botswana has raised $100 million to develop its first large-scale solar power plant, which will supply electricity to regional markets as investors respond to growing demand for power and the potential returns from excess generation.

The 100-megawatt Tati Solar Project is expected to start commercial operations next year after it completes its financing arrangements with support from South Africa’s FirstRand Ltd. and Rand Merchant Bank.

About 600 million people in Africa still lack access to electricity, according to the International Energy Agency, while roughly half of the population in Southern Africa remains without power.

The Tati plant will supply electricity to the Southern Africa Power Pool, a system that enables utilities and independent producers to trade power across borders. Bloomberg reported that investors believe there is enough demand to justify large-scale infrastructure investment in the region, according to an executive.

FIRST CAPITAL BANK SUPPORTS DODMA

As part of its corporate social responsibility First Capital Bank has donated K150 million to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) to support the repatriation of Malawians facing xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

Handing over the donation on behalf FCB head of marketing and communication Twikale Chirwa said the Bank wishes fellow Malawians a safe come back.

Receiving the donation, Dodma's Commissioner Wilson Mollen appreciated FCB for the timely suppport.

Almost 15, 000 Malawians registered to return back home ahead of a June 30 deadline for undocumented immigrants to leave South Africa.

CHICHEWA AI MODEL ON THE TABLE

Government has embarked on a digital revolution of developing Chichewa Artificial Intelligence (AI) models to help citizens unlock new opportunities for innovation, inclusion and economic growth.

Malawi is leading the world in demonstrating the model by developing the core frameworks and assembling licensed Chichewa language content that expands available training data through the Malawi Low Resource Language Data Trust Initiative with help from the World Bank and the Gates Foundation.

Minister of Defence Dr. Feston Kaupa, speaking on Tuesday in Lilongwe on behalf of Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Dr. Shadric Namalomba, challenged stakeholders to AI for Malawi National Language Data Trust workshop to invest efforts in AI, saying countries that strategically adopt AI will be better positioned to drive innovation, strengthen productivity, and compete in the global economy.

An amount of MK100m has been donated by Thomson and Triphonia Mpinganjira towards the repatriation of Malawians in South Africa.

The Mpinganjira family donated to the Malawi Government through Dodma today.

Thomson Mpinganjira stressed that no Malawian should be abandoned during in such xenophobic attacks.

CHIHANA CHAIRS SADC ORGAN TROIKA

The Extraordinary Summit of the SADC Organ Troika on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation on Monday, approved the deployment of a regional goodwill mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to support ongoing peace and stability efforts.

The virtual summit hosted by Malawi also discussed the political situation in Madagascar, urging transitional authorities to ensure an inclusive and democratic transition within the agreed timeframe, uphold human rights, and create conditions for credible elections.

Malawi hosted the summit as chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation and Malawi’s Second Vice-President Enock Chihana represented President Arthur Peter Mutharika at the summit. He reiterated SADC's commitment to promoting peace, security, and stability through dialogue, diplomacy and collective action.
