Malawi Poised to Slash Load Shedding as 12 New Battery Units Arrive

By Suleman Chitera Malawians may finally see a break from the relentless power cuts that have plagued homes and businesses for years. The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has confirmed the arrival of 12 state-of-the-art Battery Energy Storage Units (BESS) with a combined capacity of 20 megawatts—an injection of power that could mark a turning point in the country’s chronic electricity shortages. ESCOM Spokesperson Pilirani Phiri says the new batteries are designed to store excess energy during the day and release it during peak evening hours when demand spikes. “This will significantly reduce the need for load shedding, giving households and businesses a more predictable and reliable power supply,” he said....

John Chilembwe Day: A memory that refuses to die

By Suleman ChiteraChiradzulu-based activist, political and social commentator Each year, as John Chilembwe Day dawns, Malawi is summoned to remember not just a man, but a movement; not just a date, but a destiny. This is more than a public holiday. It is a living reminder that freedom was never gifted to us—it was demanded, defended, and paid for in blood, courage, and unbreakable conviction. In Chiradzulu, the name John Chilembwe does not belong to textbooks alone. It lives in the soil, in the stories of resistance, and in the restless spirit of a people who know that dignity must always be claimed....

from hand outs to high returns: the UK’s bold wakes up call for Malawi

By Suleman Chitera The United Kingdom’s decision to pivot from traditional aid to an investment-led development model in Malawi is more than a policy adjustment. It is a blunt verdict on a failed status quo—and a warning shot across the bow of a system long addicted to handouts, mismanagement, and elite capture. For decades, aid has functioned as Malawi’s economic life-support machine. It has kept the country breathing, but never strong. It has softened collapse, but never built resilience. Worse still, it has sustained a political economy in which failure carries no consequences, corruption is quietly subsidised, and reform is endlessly postponed....

Inside Lilongwe Police: how political zealous infiltrated protests as law enforcement looked on

By Contributor What was constitutionally designed to be a professional, neutral, and citizen-serving law enforcement institution was, by multiple insider accounts, systematically hollowed out and repurposed into a political tool. Under the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) administration, the Malawi Police Service—particularly in Lilongwe and Blantyre—was allegedly reduced from guardian of public order to silent accomplice in orchestrated violence. First-hand testimonies from serving police officers, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals, describe a force compromised at command level and openly subordinated to partisan interests. Officers deployed during demonstrations say they were given explicit, non-negotiable instructions from their superiors—orders that had nothing to do with crowd control or public safety....
