Chakwera concedes defeat, congratulates APM
President Lazarus Chakwera who led the Malawi Congress Party (MCP)in the September 16 general elections has conceded defeat to Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
Addressing the country from Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, Chakwera has since congratulated Mutharika.
"From those official results it was clear that my main rival, , had already secured a surmountable lead. For this reason, a moment ago, I called Professor Mutharika to congratulate in him for this historic win," he says.
Mutharika heads back to State House after losing to Chakwera in 2020.
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is expected to formally announce results of the Presidential election at 2pm today.
