Malawi has taken a significant stride in building its own capacity to overcome challenges with the launch of the Grand Challenges Malawi program. The initiative was unveiled recently, with Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima, the Minister of Education, expressing its importance in equipping the nation to effectively tackle a range of obstacles.

Minister Wirima highlighted that this launch signifies a pivotal move towards enhancing Malawi's capability to address its various challenges head-on. The primary objective is to establish a robust framework that can accommodate and effectively counter any challenges that may arise.

Central to the program's design is the intention to collaborate with scientists not only within Malawi but also across the African continent and globally. The focus is on leveraging these partnerships to drive impactful research and foster innovation, particularly in resolving critical development challenges.

Malawi has joined the ranks of countries like Rwanda, South Africa, Ethiopia, and Botswana in a shared mission to create a legacy of remarkable discoveries, groundbreaking research, and transformative innovation. This united effort is projected to play a pivotal role in propelling Malawi's journey towards becoming a middle-income economy.

The Ministry of Education has warned it will take unspecified action on schools defying the ministry’s order to suspend summer lessons in the country.

Mphatso Nkuonera, Public Relations Officer for the ministry has told Maziko Radio station in an interview that officials from the ministry are on the ground following up on rumours that some schools are still offering the summer classes.

According to Nkuonera, the ministry will take a collective action on schools which will defy the order, guided by laws.

Ministry of Education announced earlier this week that no school should be offering summer classes at a time the students are on holiday, saying the students need to rest, and this will help to curb inequalities and disparities in the country’s education sector.

The ministry has meanwhile emphasized that issues issuing an academic calendar lies in its mandate, and does not need to consult.
