Malawi Launches 2025 National Tourism Month.

The Ministry of Tourism on 1st August 2025 officially launched National Tourism Month at its offices in Lilongwe, calling on Malawians to play a leading role in promoting the country’s tourism sector.

Speaking to journalists, Minister Vera Kantukule highlighted Malawi’s vast array of tourist attractions, including mountains, lakes, and other scenic areas, noting that these provide citizens with diverse options for recreation and exploration.

She urged operators of tourism centers to maintain fair pricing for their customers, emphasizing that equitable pricing is key to promoting sustainable business growth in the sector.

The Minister also challenged both local and international investors to explore opportunities within Malawi’s tourism industry, pointing out that hundreds of potential ventures remain untapped across the country. “Every district has unique tourism opportunities that need to be harnessed,” Kantukule said.

This year’s National Tourism Month is being commemorated under the theme “Tourism for Sustainable Transformation,” reflecting the government’s commitment to fostering environmentally friendly and economically inclusive tourism practices.

Makondi Urges Voters to Back UTM, Decries Rising Poverty in Malawi

UTM vice president for the Southern Region and aspiring Member of Parliament for Chilomoni, Kabula, and Nancholi Constituency, Richard Makondi, has decried Malawi’s worsening poverty levels, saying the country is in dire need of transformative leadership.

Speaking at a rally held on Sunday at Chisangalalo Ground in Manase, Blantyre, Makondi described the situation as “worrisome,” stressing that Malawi continues to lag behind in development.

“Malawi is ranked among the poorest countries in the world. It is very worrisome to note that the country is still lagging behind in terms of development because we lack transformative leadership,” said Makondi.

The UTM vice president urged constituents in Chilomoni, Kabula, and Nancholi to entrust him with the parliamentary seat, while also rallying support for UTM president Dr. Dalitso Kabambe in the September 16, 2025, general elections.

Makondi emphasized that meaningful development can only be achieved if both parliament and the presidency are steered by leaders committed to change.

The High Court in Lilongwe has allowed Vice President Michael Usi to challenge a notice from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) that sought to compel him to answer questions and submit documents linked to corruption allegations.

Usi, who is also president of the Odya Zake Alibe Mlandu party and a presidential candidate in the September 16 elections, told the court that the notice was meant to frustrate his campaign and violated his freedom of expression.

He explained that the statements under scrutiny were made during political rallies as part of his campaign message on endemic corruption.

Delivering his ruling, Justice Redson Kapindu acknowledged that while the Acting Director of the ACB has the legal mandate to issue such notices, ordering Usi to provide documents within 24 hours was unreasonable, especially in the middle of a presidential campaign.

The judge further observed that the Vice President carries heavy constitutional responsibilities but also enjoys the right to campaign freely under the law.

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) aspiring shadow Member of Parliament for Chilomoni-Kabula, Nancholi Constituency, Noel Lipipa, has expressed concern over the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) government’s failure to continue with the construction of the Nyasa Big Bullets Football Club Stadium, a project that was initiated by the DPP-led government.

Lipipa made the remarks in Blantyre on Friday during his whistle-stop tour of Chilomoni-Kabula, Nancholi Constituency.

In an interview with PL FM and GD TV, Lipipa explained that the stalled Nyasa Big Bullets FC stadium project at Moneymen in Blantyre was located in his Blantyre City South Constituency during his tenure as Member of Parliament, before the constituency was later demarcated.

“The MCP government has failed to continue with the construction of the Nyasa Big Bullets Football Club Stadium, which was initially allocated in my constituency. The stadium could have benefited my people in Manase, Nancholi, and other surrounding areas by allowing them to watch football closer to home while also boosting small-scale businesses in the area,” said Lipipa.

He further expressed hope that if the Democratic Progressive Party wins the upcoming general elections on 16th September 2025, both the Mighty Wanderers and Nyasa Big Bullets stadium construction projects will resume.

Lipipa also urged the people of Chilomoni-Kabula, Nancholi Constituency to vote for him as their Member of Parliament so that he can continue championing tangible development initiatives in the area.

The Paramount Holdings on Friday morning launched its new liquid fertilizer product called Eagle Nano Urea at the Trade Fair Grounds.

In an interview with PL FM and GD TV, Paramount Holdings’ Managing Director, Prakash Ghedia, said that Eagle Nano Urea has gone through all the certification processes under the Ministry of Agriculture.

He added that this comes after successful trials at the Chitedze Research Station.

“Agriculture is the backbone of the country’s economy, hence Paramount Holdings’ efforts to provide a solution to poor yields among local farmers by introducing a liquid fertilizer to boost their harvests,” said Prakash Ghedia.

Ghedia further explained that one 500-milliliter bottle of Eagle Nano Urea is equivalent to a 50-kilogram bag of conventional urea fertilizer.

The Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale, who graced the occasion, said he had personally tested the newly introduced product and witnessed its effectiveness.

“We need to embrace new technology. This liquid fertilizer has come at a time when the country is struggling to import fertilizer due to forex challenges. The introduction of Eagle Nano Urea is likely to reduce this burden,” said Sam Kawale.

He expressed optimism that farmers will now be able to access the liquid fertilizer at an affordable price.

Kawale Opens 2025 Agricultural Trade Fair in Blantyre.

Blantyre, Malawi – Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale on Thursday officially opened this year’s Agricultural Trade Fair at Chichiri Trade Fair Grounds.

Speaking in an interview with PL FM and GD TV, Kawale observed that the country has remained stagnant in the agricultural sector in recent years.

He emphasized the need for a mindset shift among farmers to adopt modern technology and embrace agricultural mechanization.

“Agricultural mechanization has the potential to boost productivity and enable the country to produce more,” said Kawale.

On his part, Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) President Wisely Phiri said the trade fair has started on a positive note, with a strong turnout of exhibitors.

However, Phiri pointed out that the shortage of foreign exchange continues to weigh heavily on the economy, particularly affecting the private sector.

“If the country increases production, we will be able to stabilize the forex challenge,” Phiri added.

The fair is being held under the theme focusing on Malawi’s transition from subsistence farming to a more commercial-oriented approach.

Sungold Food Processing Limited, a subsidiary of Paramount Holdings, says it is committed to adding value to crops by producing different kinds of products such as soya pieces.

Martha Namate, a representative of Sungold Food Processing Limited and Lilongwe Plastic Limited—both trading companies under the Paramount Holdings Limited Group—disclosed this in Blantyre on Thursday during the official opening of the Agricultural Trade Fair at Chichiri Trade Fair Grounds.

In an interview with PL FM and GD TV, Namate said that Sungold Food Processing Limited buys farm produce from small-scale farmers and adds value by producing various products such as soya pieces, Phala King, Africa King Flour, and cooking oil.

“Sungold Food Processing Limited and Lilongwe Plastic Packaging, both trading companies under Paramount Holdings Limited, value the importance of the Agricultural Trade Fair. That is why we are the main sponsor of this year’s Agricultural Trade Fair,” said Martha Namate.

According to Namate, the country is empowering local farmers financially by buying soya from them, adding value to it, and then selling it on the market.

The Muvi Wachilungamo Revolutionary Party (MRP), has stated that the party is not a puppet of capitalism and will therefore not participate in the general elections scheduled for 16th September 2025.

Bantu Saunders Juma the party's president made this disclosure during a press conference held in Blantyre on Wednesday.

“Our democracy is not yet mature, and it is working to the advantage of the rich. The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) nomination fees are exorbitant — 2.5 million kwacha for parliamentary aspirants and 10 million kwacha for presidential candidates. These fees are a form of denial and oppression of vulnerable people,” observed Bantu Saunders Juma.

He further lamented that Malawi remains poor despite the advent of multiparty democracy.

Juma cited the high cost of living, corruption, nepotism, and an unconducive political environment as key challenges facing the country.

In this regard, Bantu Saunders Juma emphasized the need for a mindset change to transform the political landscape and implement policies that benefit the poor.

Therefore, the Muvi Wachilungamo Revolutionary Party (MRP) has expressed willingness to enter into an electoral alliance with either the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the United Transformation Movement (UTM), or the People’s Party (PP) — provided that their terms and conditions are met — ahead of the 16th September 2025 general elections.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change has urged media practitioners in the country to report environmental issues responsibly to support the country’s efforts toward environmental restoration.

Speaking during a two - day capacity-building training for journalists on environment and climate change reporting at Vintage Lodge in Mponera, Dowa District, the Ministry’s Principal Secretary, Richard Pelekamoyo, emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to combat environmental degradation.

Pelekamoyo stated that professional reporting has the potential to change harmful behaviors that are putting the country’s environment at risk.

He highlighted that well-trained journalists are key players in advancing Malawi’s Vision 2063 agenda, which prioritizes safeguarding the nation’s natural resources.

Pelekamoyo suggested that journalists should begin promoting the use of alternative energy sources, such as gas and electricity, instead of charcoal and firewood, as a way to protect the environment.

In his remarks, Titus Linzie, President of the Association of Environmental Journalists, described the training as timely and vital for equipping the media fraternity with knowledge on environmental reporting.

Linzie expressed confidence that, by the end of the training, journalists would be better equipped to report environmental issues professionally.

He also noted that the ongoing destruction of the environment by some Malawians is largely due to a lack of awareness, and the training aims to address this knowledge gap.

The National AIDS Commission (NAC) has urged media professionals and Social media influencers to respect the rights of all individuals when reporting on all health related issues to avoid harming innocent people.

NAC Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Beatrice Matanje, emphasized that journalists must adhere to the HIV and AIDS (Prevention and Management) Act of 2018 to ensure that people living with HIV are not harmed, either knowingly or unknowingly.

Dr. Matanje highlighted the media’s role as a strategic partner in sustaining the progress achieved in HIV prevention, treatment, and care.

NAC also cautioned media influencers to respect others' rights when posting on social media to avoid legal repercussions.

Dr. Matanje expressed concern over some influencers spreading misleading information and harming others through their content.

However, she warned Malawians against believing false claims that HIV has a cure, whether from within the country or across borders.

She urged faith leaders to collaborate with NAC in encouraging their members to continue taking antiretroviral therapy (ART) rather than discouraging them.

Dr. Matanje further threatened legal action against institutions falsely claiming to have an HIV cure, stating that such actions are against the law.

Meanwhile, NAC noted that Malawi is making significant strides in the fight against HIV/AIDS, having already achieved the global 95-95-95 HIV targets ahead of the December 2025 deadline.

These remarks were made during a NAC Media Engagement Meeting held at Linde Hotel in Mponera, Dowa District, on Friday, 23rd August 2025.

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) has urged Malawians to always pay attention to weather advisories as a way of mitigating weather hazards that put lives and properties at risk.

Speaking at a two-day training at Mponera - Dowa district, Deputy Director responsible for Risk Management, Fedson Chikuse, noted that it is worrisome that Malawi has lost $921 million due to disasters in the past four years.

Chikuse further stated that the country would require $1.2 billion to recover from the losses.

In a bid to enhance disaster risk management, DODMA, in partnership with Concern Worldwide, is engaging the media to improve information dissemination to communities.

This initiative aims to strengthen community resilience and minimize response costs.

Felix Lyson, Programmes Officer for Concern Worldwide, said that while the focus in Malawi has traditionally been on response rather than preparedness, efforts are now shifting towards building community resilience and governance systems.

Lyson emphasized that it is time for Malawi to prioritize preparedness to prevent severe loss of life and property.
