COUNCILS GET CDF FUNDS.

Government has released 85.5 billion Malawi kwacha for CDF projects across the country .

This has been announced by the ministry of finance in a statement signed by it's principal Secretary ,Peterson Ponderani.

The ministry says the money has been released to 30 out of 36 local councils that have finished the procurement process and identified contractors for the projects .

They added that the release is part of efforts to ensure that CDF projects start and complete on time.

" The funds are meant for advance payment to contractors to mobilise and commence implementation of various CDF projects " the statement reads.

Meanwhile the government has also released 5.4 billion kwacha for project management costs and 2.8 billion kwacha for sports development ,creative arts and innovation .

One of the Malawi Congress Party members of Parliament,Ayuba James has commended the government for timely release of funds.

" APM si munthu wamba,I thought it was just a campaign promise but now it is becoming reality on ground " James said.

Mwanamvekha Hails EIB-Centenary Bank Partnership

Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralization Hon Joseph Mathyola Mwanamvekha MP has hailed the partnership between the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Centenary Bank Malawi, saying it will help expand financial inclusion and access to capital for Malawians.

Speaking at the official launch at BICC in Lilongwe, Mwanamvekha said EIB is providing €7.5 million (about MK15.6 billion) through Centenary Bank to support small agricultural businesses and farmers, with a focus on sustainable agriculture, women and youth empowerment.

Mwanamvekha said the partnership will help farmers invest in better inputs, enable small businesses to grow and create jobs, describing financial inclusion as an important tool for improving livelihoods and economic growth in Malawi.

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has praised the relationship between the Government and the private sector, saying it has the potential to develop the nation.

The President said this after meeting with the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) today at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

He noted that the Government has maintained a close relationship with the MCCCI and called for continued collaboration, particularly in key initiatives such as the El Niño response, trade, and other economic priorities.

MCCCI President Ronald Ngwira expressed gratitude for the opportunity to meet with the President and pledged the business community's support in responding to the impact of El Niño and boosting trade.

Mwanamvekha holds talks with the Korean Deputy Minister of Finance in Seoul.

Malawi’s finance team is working overtime in Seoul—turning the KOAFEC conference into a deal-making hub for grants, investment and technical support.

Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha has met with AfDB President Sidi Ould Tah and South Korea’s Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy Jinsung Moon to push for resources to boost Malawi’s budget.

“The meeting has offered us an opportunity to engage further with the Bank but also the Korean government.

The two partners are willing to partner us in our development efforts,” said the minister, who also shared investment opportunities available in Malawi with the Korean deputy minister of finance.

“Korea says it is ready to explore investment opportunities in Malawi but also help us with skills transfer in technology. This is important if we are to create a productive economy,” said the minister.

Minister Moon said Korea remains committed to supporting African partners, positioning Malawi to tap into grants, concessional loans and private-sector opportunities that could boost key sectors.

South Korea

Malawi is set to benefit from special funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to support the importation of fuel and fertiliser, two of the country’s major consumers of scarce foreign exchange.

AfDB director general and acting vice-president for Africa, Abdou Kamara said Malawi is among the first countries selected to benefit from the Bank’s Global Energy and Fertiliser Crisis Response Framework designed to mitigate the impact of the Iran conflict.

Kamara was speaking on the sidelines of the eighth Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation (Koafec) Ministerial Conference in Seoul, South Korea, during a meeting with Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha.

Mwanamvekha said Malawi has, today, submitted its request for this funding.

Mwanamvekha is scheduled to meet AfDB President Sidi Ould Tah tomorrow.

The AfDB board has also approved $20.5 million—about K34 billion—for Malawi in direct budget support following a request submitted in May this year.

Mwanamvekha Launches Sustainable Social Protection Financing Strategy

Lilongwe — 4 September 2026:

Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralization Hon. Joseph Mathyola Mwanamvekha, MP, has launched the Strategy for Sustainable Financing for Social Protection, aimed at strengthening efforts to address poverty and vulnerabilities among poor households.

The launch was held at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe on today Friday.

Speaking during the function, Mwanamvekha who was also the Guest of Honour, reaffirmed the commitment of His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s government to reducing poverty and improving the welfare of Malawians.

The Minister said sustainable financing is critical to ensuring that social protection programmes reach and support vulnerable households across the country.

Also speaking at the event, Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Hon. Mary Thom Navicha, MP, emphasized the importance of strengthening social protection systems to ensure that vulnerable and poor Malawians receive the necessary support.

Navicha said the strategy will help provide a sustainable financing framework for social protection programmes and strengthen government’s efforts to reduce poverty and build resilience among vulnerable households.

Other dignitaries at the launch included government officials and stakeholders in the social protection sector.
